What kind of a show are you guys puttin on here today?

SPEAKER_2 (0:06)

You're not interested in art?

Adam Kempenaar (0:07)

No.

SPEAKER_4 (0:08)

Well, look, we're going to do this thing. We're going to have a conversation.

Adam Kempenaar (0:13)

Hey, Filmspotters, archive drop time. Josh, we're going back, can it really be, 35 years to 1991 Now, before we take a brief look at our lists and set them up a little bit, I do have to give you some bad news.

What you don't know is that producer Sam gave me the option of this or another potential top five from the archive that he was tying in to Halloween and horror, and that was top five movie animals.

Josh Larsen (0:48)

You're never going to allow that. I feel like that was, if you were ever going to loosen up the grip a little bit, it was starting, you were starting to have a more relaxed life, and then Michael Phillips and I, without your approval, had too much fun, did top five movie animals, and it was just, the clamps came down.

Adam Kempenaar (1:12)

Went off the rails.

Josh Larsen (1:15)

Never again.

Adam Kempenaar (1:17)

Now, in fairness, and I could be wrong, I could be wrong. You tell me with a clear head, Josh, be unbiased.

Do you think top five movie animals would get more downloads than the top five movies of 1991?

Josh Larsen (1:36)

Well, it's not all about the downloads. Sometimes it's about the art.

Adam Kempenaar (1:42)

Okay, well.

Josh Larsen (1:42)

And you make those choices.

Adam Kempenaar (1:44)

You do, yeah.

Josh Larsen (1:45)

We've chosen commerce over art.

Adam Kempenaar (1:48)

Yeah, I did. Archive drop. I definitely did.

Josh Larsen (1:51)

So, all right, that's fine.

Adam Kempenaar (1:52)

Okay, top five films of 1991 We will not belabor this too much, but I'm looking over our lists here really quickly.

Looks like a pretty darn good year. So good, in fact, that we have a bunch of films and only one, no, two crossover between us. Okay, I'll take that.

Josh Larsen (2:12)

Great year. And I mean, the ones that you have that I don't.

And I think this is probably rare. I would happily have all of those on my list and feel like it was respectable and movies that I really love. So yeah, 91, man, what a year. Yeah.

Adam Kempenaar (2:32)

Well, we hope you enjoy this look back at our top five films of 91 Remember that access to the Filmspotting Archive and top fives like this and yes, Movie Manimals. Josh, get it ready. When we come out of this, we'll have it ready. What show number is Movie Manimals so they can look it up easily? Have it ready. You think I know that?

Josh Larsen (2:53)

Off the top of my head?

Adam Kempenaar (2:53)

Well, that's what Google is for, Josh. All right. We'll make it easier on them.

Josh Larsen (2:57)

You know, Adam, the number of films that have done Movie Manimals, it's gonna be endless.

Adam Kempenaar (3:05)

Oh, I know. It won't be the first.

Josh Larsen (3:06)

How am I gonna find our show?

Adam Kempenaar (3:08)

Access to the Filmspotting Archive is just one of the benefits of joining the Filmspotting family. Learn more at filmspottingfamily.com. This list is from May 2014

Not an anniversary, so we must have had another very good reason to tie it into that year. One of our annual year by year lists at that point. Enjoy.

SPEAKER_2 (3:30)

See, it's basic dog psychology. If you scare them and get them peeing down their leg, they submit.

Yet, if you project weakness and you draw aggression, that's how people get hurt.

You see, fear causes hesitation. And hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true. So it's simple. You project strength to avoid conflict. Peace through superior firepower.

Adam Kempenaar (3:57)

You're listening to this very special Keanu Reeves-infused edition of Filmspotting with Josh Larsen. I'm Adam Kempenaar. Patrick Swayze there as Bodie in Catherine Bigelow's Point Break.

My number one film of 1991 Actually not. My number five, probably. If it was really 1991, but it's not.

Josh Larsen (4:13)

I am an FBI agent.

Adam Kempenaar (4:17)

I know you are, Josh. I know you are.

One of the memorable lines among many from that film, Point Break. And truly, if we were reflecting back on these films as we saw them, I was 15 years old in 1991 You were 16, 17 Yeah, probably 16 So, you know, we probably didn't have the refined taste, Josh, that we have now. But Point Break would have been in my top five. Not going to make my top five now as we get back to our year by year countdowns. We started at 2004, the year before Filmspotting began. We've been counting back. We actually stopped at 93
