Hello world, you know what time it is. It's another DeGrads Podcast, the Degrassi Re-Watch Podcast with two cast members of that very show who have never actually seen it. But we're seeing it now.
Mike Lobel (0:33)
For the first time.
Shane Kippel (0:35)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I am Shane Warren Kippel. I played Gavin Spinner-Mason on said show.
Mike Lobel (0:41)
And I'm Mike Lobel. I play Jay Hogart.
And we are, we made it past the first double episode of season three here. Yes. We're in new fun territory. Okay, so the interesting thing is everybody talks about this episode because that one scene, that one image, right? I didn't realize it happened this early in the show. For some reason, I thought that it happened like season four or five or something.
Shane Kippel (1:05)
Oh, no, fully season three. And I remember Cassie being very excited about getting to do that.
Mike Lobel (1:13)
Was she actually like, I'm so eager to know what she was thinking when she got the script.
Shane Kippel (1:20)
Yeah, that was many moons ago. But I mean, she was 14, 15, maybe.
Mike Lobel (1:29)
This is kind of a crazy thing, right? Like, how are you going to give a... OK, so remember when we were talking to Shelly and James, and they were like, what we put you kids through? We feel so guilty. And I kind of flash back to that moment. It's like, how are you going to hold up a thong and be like, hey, you're wearing this for the episode.
Enjoy. Get out there, sport.
Shane Kippel (1:52)
Degrassi.
Mike Lobel (1:53)
It goes there. It went there.
Maybe it went a little too there.
Shane Kippel (1:58)
You get the same kind of thing with any other high school show. But we were actually our age playing. That's right.
Mike Lobel (2:04)
That's right.
Shane Kippel (2:05)
And that's the main difference.
Mike Lobel (2:07)
Because that's why they would do it. They would get like 25-year-olds to do all this salacious stuff because there was no risk. So yeah, I don't know. Questionable. I still enjoy the episode. I thought it was a great episode. We're seeing Manny break free of Emma for the first time and become her own person.
Shane Kippel (2:27)
She's very brazen about it.
It was a very quick change. Obviously, this has been building for a while because she was sick of being the cute little girl next door. But I don't know.
Mike Lobel (2:42)
Craig's little sister.
Shane Kippel (2:43)
But the way that she just steamrolled right over Emma when Emma was just telling her, reel it in a little bit.
This show is all about extremes in the moment. There's no midway. There's no Goldilocks zone. For sure.
Mike Lobel (3:04)
Let's get into it. But before we do, you went to Mexico. Tell me about that.
Shane Kippel (3:07)
I did go to Mexico.
Mike Lobel (3:08)
How was that?
Shane Kippel (3:09)
Thank you for reminding me. Yeah. It was just a quick trip with my brother. Beautiful resort, great food. It was like 10 percent filled. There was no one there. There might have been like 50 people on this massive resort.
Because of that, there was just no nightlife.
Mike Lobel (3:29)
Did you walk into the empty disco? I've done that.
Shane Kippel (3:32)
Pretty much. Yeah.
Mike Lobel (3:33)
The first night we were there, tumbleweed goes by, you laugh.
Shane Kippel (3:39)
That's almost exactly how it was. All the bars were empty. There were no lines anywhere.
You didn't have to lay down towels.
Mike Lobel (3:47)
The wooden door you entered through is squeaky.
Shane Kippel (3:49)
It's like, and you can actually hear it. Yeah, because there's no talking anywhere. Yeah. Yeah. It was-
Mike Lobel (3:55)
The bartender was animatronic. It wasn't even a human bartender in there.
Shane Kippel (4:02)
Yeah, like, like Passengers when it was Michael Sheen, who's sort of like the animatronic robotic version of the bartender from The Shining. Did you see?
Mike Lobel (4:15)
Oh, yeah.
Shane Kippel (4:17)
Right? Yeah.
Mike Lobel (4:17)
Yeah. Yeah. Well, I saw The Shining. I didn't see. Yeah.
Shane Kippel (4:20)
You didn't see Passengers?
Mike Lobel (4:21)
No. Oh, wait a minute.
Shane Kippel (4:23)
Yeah.
Mike Lobel (4:23)
No, I saw that movie. What am I talking about? He wakes up and in a spaceship. Chris Pratt on the spaceship. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Shane Kippel (4:30)
That's right. Jennifer Lawrence, Lawrence Fishburne.
Mike Lobel (4:34)
Good movie. And he has a great nod to The Shining in there. I mean, they made a trope. They created this trope, right? Like it's forever going to be repeated in films.
