Wow, returning champion, Lauren Conlin, giving Gary yet another weekend off. Gary, I haven't gotten the edible fruit basket from Gary for giving him all these weekends off, but Lauren, how are you? Welcome back.
Lauren Conlin (1:00)
I'm great, I'm great. And you know, Gary still does a lot of technical stuff in the background, so he's here doing it. He's just not really front-facing on camera.
Mark Geragos (1:10)
Well, you get me, you get me. I get you. Thank you, front-face Conlin. And for front-face Conlin, I'm gonna do a throwback to eight months ago for today's episode.
Lauren Conlin (1:21)
You are so proud of this.
Mark Geragos (1:23)
Oh, I am so proud of this. For all the hater Joes and hater Hoes out there, let me just take you back. I had said in real time, roughly eight months ago, I had called out, as I often do, prosecutorial misconduct. And mind you, I love when I use this line, some of my best friends are prosecutors. So really good prosecutors don't hold this against me. In fact, really good prosecutors many of which, or whom watch this reasonable doubt religiously, not the least of which, starting over 10 years ago, when Adam was co-hosting with me. We'll say the same thing, that guys like this are like, the way I feel about bad defense lawyers who phone it in, it's a stain on the profession. And so what are we talking about is late on Friday, this is dropping Sunday morning, a judge in New Mexico dismissed, get this breaking news, dismissed all charges against Timothy Busfield. And why am I taking a victory lap?
You have a teed up there.
Lauren Conlin (2:34)
I do. I absolutely do.
Let's take it back, shall we?
Adam Carolla (2:40)
How on earth does the prosecution in good faith file a case against Timothy Busfield? It's outrageous.
Lauren Conlin (2:52)
That was my favorite.
Adam Carolla (2:53)
Welcome to Two Angry Men. Mark, what the hell is happening in New Mexico? I have to tell you, and I don't ever remember saying this, I am questioning the ethics of the prosecution of Timothy Busfield. I am stunned that prosecutors brought these charges at this point because they have to prove in good faith that they believe that they can get a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt. I do not see how the hell they can do that. All I'm seeing is the opposite.
Mark Geragos (3:30)
You know, one of my good friends actually-
Gary Smith (3:32)
Yeah, hold on, let me pause it.
Lauren Conlin (3:34)
What's that?
Mark Geragos (3:35)
You're going to say it in a sec, and I want to, as soon as I finish this little vignette, then I want to go into and set this up.
Lauren Conlin (3:43)
Okay.
Mark Geragos (3:44)
Yeah, I do podcast with him, is a ex-sex crimes prosecutor from Orange County, a guy by the name of Matt Murphy. When this was first announced, before he had ever surrendered himself, I said just based on what they were saying, that there was no way this case would have ever been filed criminally by an experienced sex crimes prosecutor. That was before I knew anything, just based on the fact that you had these allegations that a mother was disgruntled because her kid had been what they call re-cast.
Lauren Conlin (4:19)
Not just- Well, okay. I mean-
Mark Geragos (4:21)
So, besides shamelessly plugging both podcasts on my third podcast, let me just say something here.
Before this case was filed, we were publicly questioning the motivations of it being filed and everything else. You saw there, I wasn't going to go full Monty with the shameless plugs. I could have had the one with Murphy. Matt Murphy, by the way, is no shrinking violent when it comes to sex crimes. I mean, Matt Murphy, I always said, one of the most formidable prosecutors I ever went up against was Murphy when he was at Orange County. I mean, besides being a fabulously charming and good-looking man, he has a brain that used to just, you know, you knew you had to bring your A game when you're going against Murphy.
