What's up, it's Pete Hoffman with another episode of WFAN Daily. And I had to come on right now, because there are a lot of fights going on within the Mets fandom. And I want to get to it, and I want to attack it, because this is a real issue right now. There is fights between who's the right way to be a fan, what's the wrong way to be a fan, all that stuff. First of all, let me just say this. Congratulations to the New York Yankees for clinching another playoff. I mean, congratulations. It never ends with you. It's amazing. This is not about the Yankees and anything to do with them, because they're successful. That's how an organization is supposed to be run. I know that they are the top of the creme de la creme, them and the Dodgers. They continue to win religiously. It's something that doesn't happen. It doesn't happen to many franchises, but they're at the top. The Mets are pretty much at the bottom of that list. They got eliminated today.
We're going to sit here and talk about all this stuff between which Mets fan is right, and at the end of the day, the Mets, it's not even mid-September, and we are officially done. There's no playoff race. This was never a race. The Mets were done by April 30th. They were eliminated from the playoffs. Now, they had a whole season to play out, but we knew back in April that this team was done, was wrapped up, it was over. So let's be all, take a deep breath and realize that the frustration that Mets fans feel, I think we're all frustrated, but there is this line now that we're drawing in the sand and we're saying, you're either on this side of the Mets fandom or that side of the Mets fandom.
Here we go. First things first, we all can agree upon this season has been a disaster, has been a disappointment, has been, there's been nothing good about this season. You can tell me and sell me that, oh, Carson Bench could be a rookie of the year. Great. That's great. That's future stuff, future stuff. I'm talking about present stuff. 2026, the Mets were bad. End of story. This was not a good season. They're stuck at 69 wins right now. At the end of the day, they're going to have a win total of maybe 73 Okay? Maybe 74 That's it. That's where they're at. They're not winning this amazing amount of games and making a playoff push. None of that nonsense. They're winning about 73 games. Their rover under was, if I'm correct, 90 and a half. They are far below where they were supposed to be. That's the first thing about going into the season and why it's a disappointment. Tonight, though, this is the big issue that everybody's having is why are Mets fans cheering Pete Alonso? Why are Mets fans booing David Stearns and the Mets and Jonah Tong for walking Pete Alonso? It is a message that some fans are trying to put out there that we are tired of the mediocre team that we have in front of us. It's not even mediocre, it was bad. This bad franchise that's been in front of us. Steve Cohen in 2024, when they went to the NLCS, made a point of saying, this is what the Mets fan should feel on a regular basis. They should feel happy. They should have this feel of, we're going to win it every year or come close to it, or at least have an opportunity. This year, we got kicked in the dick. We got kicked so hard in the stomach, and we never recovered. Not even close. It was the worst season ever, and the amount of money they invested into this team, it's a joke because though the price tag is big, when you see the receipt, you go, what did we spend money on?
What did David Sterns buy? This is like my mother back in the day looking at, you spent how much on clothes? Can I see the clothes? What did you actually purchase? What did you actually buy?
You're buying jeans with holes in them. That doesn't make any sense. That's not even a full pair of jeans, and you spent how much on it? That's basically what David Sterns did. He went for the trendy moves, the analytical moves, but whatever. We're talking about the booing. We're getting into the whole thing about why Mets fans are aggravated and why Pete Alonso is, you know, people are obsessed with Pete Alonso. It's not even Pete Alonso. It's the, he is the symbol of what's wrong with this franchise.
