Look, OpenAI reported to investors that its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion. That is a massive $20 billion short of the nearly $70 billion figure that financial media had widely reported just prior.
SPEAKER_5 (1:41)
Yeah, and that discrepancy alone was enough to sink the tech-focused Nasdaq by 1.4%. You saw major artificial intelligence infrastructure stocks dragged right down with it. I mean, Nvidia, Oracle, Micron, CoreWeave, they all took a direct hit.
SPEAKER_4 (1:56)
Right. So you have this strange scenario where a private company sends an internal memo about its revenue, and it manages to erase significant value across public market caps almost instantly. You are looking at a situation where the numbers driving the global economy are effectively rumors until they are suddenly not.
SPEAKER_5 (2:14)
Which brings up the real issue we have to look at. We are not talking about a failing company here.
We are talking about financial illusions. How did the entire market accidentally invent $20 billion of missing revenue?
SPEAKER_4 (2:28)
Well, the mechanics of that mistake really come down to a basic accounting trap regarding gross versus net annual recurring revenue.
Adrian Miller pointed out that Anthropic accounts for partner driven revenue. So like sales through AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud on a gross basis. But OpenAI's internal figures reflect direct net revenue.
SPEAKER_5 (2:49)
So if someone builds an app and pays $100 to access Anthropic's model through Amazon, Anthropic is recording that entire $100 as their revenue before Amazon even takes its fee. They are claiming the gross transaction value.
SPEAKER_4 (3:02)
Exactly. OpenAI, on the other hand, is mostly selling direct API access or ChatGPT subscriptions. They're just counting the money that actually hits their own bank account.
If there is a partner involved, OpenAI strips out the partner fees before they record the revenue. They are operating on net.
SPEAKER_5 (3:19)
The analysts essentially trapped themselves.
They saw Anthropic reporting these massive gross numbers and wanted to run a direct comparison. You have Wall Street analysts trying to manually adjust OpenAI's net numbers up to match Anthropic's gross framework just to create an apples to apples comparison.
SPEAKER_4 (3:38)
That manual adjustment is what resulted in the falsely inflated $68-70 billion headline being reported as fact. Someone looked at OpenAI's real net number, guessed what the gross equivalent would be if they accounted for it like Anthropic, and leaked that synthetic number to the press.
SPEAKER_5 (3:54)
I just have to ask why the market is relying on manual media extrapolations in the first place though.
Why are we trading on synthetic numbers rather than direct company disclosures? You have to question the maturity of how these frontier companies are reporting their token resale and cloud partner revenue.
SPEAKER_4 (4:10)
The maturity just isn't there yet for usage based digital commodities.
Every company is drawing their own lines around what counts as recognized revenue. It changes depending on whether someone buys access through an API directly or through an enterprise cloud marketplace. There is no standard rule book for how you count a generated token.
