Hey, it's Jay. I don't know what your day's been like, but I was just thinking about you for a minute.
And I hope you're being a little patient with yourself because you deserve it. And yeah, I'll talk to you soon.

**Jay Shetty** (2:01)
I think one of the biggest reasons you might be unhappy is because you're thinking about yourself too much. Now, just hear me out. I'm not saying you're selfish or self-centered. I'm not saying you only care about yourself, but I am talking about something that almost every single one of us does. We overanalyze ourselves to the point of unhappiness. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, I feel like I'm doing everything right. So why don't I feel good about myself? Maybe you're exercising more than you used to. You're going to therapy. You're eating healthier. You're trying to be more intentional in your relationships. You're reading books, listening to podcasts, journaling, meditating and genuinely trying to become a better version of yourself. From the outside, your life looks exactly like what everyone says should make someone happier. And yet there's still this feeling that something isn't clicking. I hear this from people all the time. They'll say, Jay, I don't understand it. I'm doing the work, but I still don't feel peaceful. I still overthink everything. I still compare myself to everyone around me. If you've ever had that thought, I want you to know you're not alone. But I also want to suggest something that might feel a little uncomfortable.
What if the reason you still feel stuck isn't because you haven't worked on yourself enough? What if instead it's because you've been working on only yourself for too long? What if somewhere along the way, your attention became too trapped inside your own life? Think about your day so far. Just today, how many thoughts have you had? Whether you wore the right outfit? Whether you said the wrong thing in that meeting? Whether your relationship is where it should be? Whether you're attractive enough, productive enough, successful enough? Especially when we're trying to improve our lives, so much of our attention gets pointed in the same direction, inward. This isn't a character flaw. It's actually very human. When we're stressed, anxious, lonely, heartbroken or uncertain, our brains naturally become more self-focused. Psychologists call this process rumination. But sometimes, instead of helping us solve problems, our minds just start replaying them. We revisit conversations that ended days ago. We imagine hard situations that haven't happened yet. We constantly check in with ourselves, hoping that if we just think a little harder, analyze a little deeper, or understand ourselves a little better, we'll finally unlock the feeling we've been searching for. The problem is that our brains aren't always good at recognizing when healthy reflection has slowly turned into unhealthy rumination. Reflection helps you move forward, while rumination convinces you that you're stuck. Before long, your mind becomes like a room with mirrors on every wall.
Everywhere you turn, you keep running into yourself. And here's the hard part. The more time you spend trapped inside your own thoughts, the smaller your world begins to feel. So your problems become bigger, your insecurities become louder, your disappointments become heavier. It's not necessarily because your life has gotten worse. It's because your attention has become narrower. So today, I want to talk to you about how to refocus your attention so that you can feel better about yourself. If you can learn to gently redirect your attention outward, something incredible starts to happen. Your world expands, you become more present, more connected, and almost as a side effect, you begin to feel happier internally along the way. I'm going to walk you through four shifts that can get you out of the negative, inward spiral and ultimately make you feel better in every aspect of your life.
