The Big Picture

October 9, 2026

Drop the “the.” Just “Big Picture.” It’s cleaner. Today on Big Picture, Sean and Amanda discuss the much anticipated (and also dreaded) legacy sequel ‘The Social Reckoning,’ written and directed by one of our main characters: Aaron Sorkin.

I'm talking about a sequel to our beloved The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin's series, The Big Picture.

And I'm going to be talking about the big picture of the social network. And I'm going to be talking about the big picture of the social network. I'm talking about a sequel to our beloved The Social Network. Aaron Sorkin's sequel, The Social Reckoning, arrived some 16 years after his first film with David Fincher as the director. This time, Sorkin is in the director's chair for a follow-up story about Mark Zuckerberg, whistleblowers and the ghastly impact of social media in our lives. So does it work? We'll break it all down, along with a brief history of the best and worst legacy sequels. But first, I will report on the very best movies at the New York Film Festival and some movie news. It's all coming up right after this.

Sean Fennessey (2:13)

OK, Amanda, it's the big picture after dark.

It's 7 16 p.m. That's right. We are recording. There are very few events, let alone movie releases, that we would do this for, that we would record at night.

But we hadn't seen The Social Reckoning. You were kind enough to wait to see it with me. It was only right that we see it together. Yeah. And I was in New York, so you waited.

Amanda Dobbins (2:35)

I wasn't going to do it alone.

Sean Fennessey (2:37)

We watched it together. We will break into it shortly. Before we do, we discussed this a bit on Monday, but Skydance, the flag is flying high, waving proudly, strongly. Will you salute it?

Amanda Dobbins (2:49)

Do you have one at home?

Sean Fennessey (2:51)

A Skydance flag? Not yet. I mean, we'll see what kind of cinema they make.

Amanda Dobbins (2:54)

Right. In my neighborhood, it's the American flag, the McDonald's flag, and then the Skydance flag right in a row, flying over Los Angeles.

Sean Fennessey (3:01)

The three absolute pillars of capitalism right there.

A lot of news coming out. You can listen to a great many podcasts to listen to, you know, who's been brought in to fire people and how the money's going to work and the $79 billion in debt getting paid down. I'm only interested in the movies. What movies are they going to make? Yeah, tell us. Here's the movie news that we've gotten. One, Transformers is coming back.

Amanda Dobbins (3:23)

Congratulations.

Sean Fennessey (3:24)

Not only is it coming back, Steven Spielberg is coming back. Steven Spielberg, of course, one of the producers of the original stretch of Transformers films with Michael Bay.

No director yet attached. Michael Bay rumored to maybe be returning. We don't know. There have been two Transformers movies without Michael Bay and they've tried to relaunch the franchise once with Bumblebee. You saw that one?

Amanda Dobbins (3:43)

Haley Seinfeld?

SPEAKER_3 (3:43)

Yep.

Amanda Dobbins (3:44)

No.

Sean Fennessey (3:44)

Okay.

Amanda Dobbins (3:45)

Saw the trailer.

Sean Fennessey (3:45)

Pretty good.

SPEAKER_3 (3:46)

Okay.

Sean Fennessey (3:46)

Pretty good.

Amanda Dobbins (3:47)

I like her.

Sean Fennessey (3:47)

The other one was Transformers Rise of the Beasts.

Amanda Dobbins (3:50)

Didn't see that one. Was that animated?

Sean Fennessey (3:52)

That was a crossover, not animated. Steven Capel directed that one, director of Creed 2 Not very good and yet I liked it.

No one else did though, so they got to reboot again.
