The Role of Vitamin K in Tooth Decay
Dr. Joseph Mercola - Take Control of Your Health
October 1, 2026
Vitamin K2 helps direct calcium into your teeth and jawbone, supporting stronger enamel and the tissues that keep your teeth firmly in place instead of relying on calcium intake alone People with the lowest vitamin K2 blood levels had the most advanced periodontal disease, including greater gum...

Your teeth are not inert little rocks. They are living structures that lose and regain minerals every day. And that process is driven by what's circulating in your bloodstream, not just what happens at the bathroom sink.
So here's the uncomfortable question. What if the most important thing protecting your teeth has nothing to do with your toothbrush?

Hello, and welcome to Dr. Mercola's Cellular Wisdom. That's the reframe in this article. Most people picture decay as a surface problem, something that attacks from the outside and burrows in. Brushing and flossing matter, nobody's arguing otherwise.
But Dr. Mercola points to a nutrient that almost never comes up in a dental conversation, vitamin K2. Not K1, the leafy green form that mostly supports normal blood clotting. K2 comes from fermented foods in certain animal products, and those have quietly disappeared from the typical American plate.
SPEAKER_1 (1:11)
The reason that gap matters is calcium traffic control. Vitamin K2 determines where the calcium in your body actually ends up, and whether any of it reaches your teeth at all. You can eat plenty of calcium and still have it circulating where it does no good. And this isn't a yes or no switch.
As K2 status falls, the damage gets progressively worse.
SPEAKER_3 (1:33)
The centerpiece study, published in Health Care, did something most nutrition research doesn't.
Researchers directly measured vitamin K2 in the blood of 100 generally healthy adults. Half had healthy gums. The other half had diagnosed periodontitis, the most advanced stage of gum disease where inflammation pushes below the gum line and destroys the bone and connective tissue anchoring your teeth. No food questionnaires. They drew blood and measured it.
SPEAKER_1 (2:00)
And the numbers are hard to dismiss.
Healthy adults averaged 0.43 nanomoles per liter. People with periodontitis averaged only 0.27 regardless of age or sex. What really stands out is the staircase pattern because levels dropped step by step as the condition advanced.
SPEAKER_3 (2:17)
Stage 1 averaged roughly 0.37.
Stage 2, 0.27. Stage 3, 0.22. And stage 4, just 0.19. No sudden cliff, a steady decline that tracked the destruction of the supporting tissue. The same pattern showed up in how aggressively the condition progressed, from 0.36 in the slowest cases down to 0.21 in the fastest moving group.
SPEAKER_1 (2:43)
And look at which clinical sign correlated most strongly, bleeding during a dental examination. As vitamin K2 declined, bleeding on probing increased substantially, one of the strongest statistical associations in the whole study.
That matters because bleeding gums are the symptom people are most likely to shrug off. They rarely hurt.
SPEAKER_3 (3:04)
That's the trap. Measurable tissue destruction and low vitamin K2 are already happening long before a tooth feels loose enough to send someone to the dentist. Lower K2 also matched greater attachment loss. Deeper pockets where the gums pull away and harmful bacteria collect, and more jawbone loss.
Once the bone supporting a tooth is gone, that tooth becomes unstable, full stop.
SPEAKER_1 (3:27)
There's even a spread component.
Participants whose condition affected less than 30% of their teeth averaged about 0.3 versus roughly 0.26 for those whose condition had spread throughout the mouth. So K2 tracked not only how severe things got at a single tooth, but how widely the damage spread.
SPEAKER_3 (3:46)
So what's the mechanism? Dr. Mercola explains that vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin, a protein that binds calcium into hard tissues like enamel and bone. Without enough K2, osteocalcin stays inactive, and that calcium just circulates. K2 also supports the cells that build new bone while reducing formation of osteoclasts, the cells that break bone down, partly by lowering a signaling molecule called rankle.
Less breakdown, and the balanced tips toward preserving the foundation under every tooth.
SPEAKER_1 (4:20)
And this is where the vitamin D3 pairing becomes essential. The article uses a brick wall analogy. D3 delivers the bricks to the job site by increasing calcium absorption, and K2 is the mason who sets each brick in place.
Take one without the other, and you've given your body more calcium to manage with fewer tools to place it correctly.
SPEAKER_3 (4:39)
For practical steps, whole foods come first. Natto-aged cheeses like gouda, pastured egg yolks, and grass-fed organ meats like liver, eaten a few times a week.
That's the habit worth building before anything else.
SPEAKER_1 (4:52)
If those foods rarely appear on your plate, the research suggests most adults may benefit from 90 to 180 micrograms daily, with children up to age 10 around 45 and teens around 90 And if you're already taking about 5,000 international units of D3, pair it with roughly 180 micrograms of K2, ideally with your evening meal.
