The main thing, actually, it's funny, like with Claude and stuff, I only use it if I can prompt it well enough to actually explore the insights deeply. Because again, like, if I don't have a base understanding, then it's just going to give me like, you know, kind of more AI slop, so to speak. Like, you know, if you just go and like be like, oh, like, why are photonics interesting? It'll just be like, oh, like, no, like, here's the reasons why, like energy is a bottleneck. And but it's not going to be like, hey, there's like near package optics, there's co-packaged optics, right? There's linear pluggables, like all these sort of things, like it will not be able to do that. So first you need to have that first party knowledge, then the magic and the superpower of AI is like, once you have that knowledge, then you've got like the best researcher in the world to help you because you're prompting it in that direction. And then it's going and searching in those areas. And that to me is the superpower.

Welcome back to Tank Talks. I'm your host, Matt Cohen, founder and managing partner of Ripple Ventures. And this week's episode, I'm joined by Shomik Ghosh, partner at Sierra Ventures.
Shomik is one of those investors who has actually sat on both sides of the table and at almost every stage. He started in fixed income trading and tech M&A, spent time in venture debt, and even joined a startup that didn't work out. He then went to top tier capital investing in growth stage companies like CircleCI, Anaplant and Shape Security. From there, he moved to Boldstart Ventures, where he was a partner focused on inception. First check investing in technical founders, building enterprise software, and invested in companies like Cloud Query and Noted AI.
Then in 2026, he made a move that a lot of people in the industry don't make. Instead of starting his own fund or going even earlier, he joined Sierra, a 40-year plus firm to invest across frontier and applied AI, from inception through Series A and beyond. What I like about Shomik is that he doesn't just live in the private markets. He actually watches the public markets closely, and uses those signals to think about where real enterprise value is showing up, in manufacturing, defense, materials, robotics, and the infrastructure layer underneath agents. This is a conversation about technical founders, stage investing, culture inside a VC firm, and where AI is actually creating durable businesses, not just chatbots. Now let's jump into the Tank for this week's episode with Shomik from Sierra. Thanks for joining us in the Tank today, Shomik.

Thanks for having me, Matt. I really appreciate it.
Matt Cohen (2:22)
Yeah. Super excited to chat with you. It would love it if you can give our audience a quick background, where you grew up, your early childhood, and a bit of your professional career highlights. Yeah.

I grew up on the east coast of the US, so in New Jersey. Went to school in Pittsburgh at Carnegie Mellon, and then that's how I found my way into actually fixed income, sales and trading, and enjoyed that universe. But at the time, while I was in college, Facebook had IPO'd, and I was trying to understand how people were valuing that, and I thought the best way to do that would be to come to the Bay Area. And so I came out here for investment banking. From there, actually was going to join a hedge fund and fell into the venture world, basically through venture debt, joining a start up as the first employee. We failed learnings there, but then joined a top tier capital. As we were kind of building out our direct investment platform, invested a number of like pre IPO and growth companies there. One such company that I was able to get into through Boldstart where I joined, was this company called Snyk, which ended up becoming a large company. And that's how I met the Boldstart team, joined them, had a great close to six years there from a principal to a partner. And then through actually being at Boldstart, one of the first companies I was involved with this company called SpectroCloud, where my current colleague Mark from Sierra was on the board. And I got to meet Mark through that journey.
And these things are long timelines. And we just started to talk more and more and joined Sierra. And so Sierra is a 45-year-old venture fund, back in the day, backed Intuitive Surgical and Intuit. And then more recently, obviously, a number of stuff in AI and frontier tech. And that's kind of what brings us to today.
