Hey, everybody, since there are five Fridays in October, we're sitting this week out, but we are dropping into your Shelf Respect feed today to give you a sneak peek into our brand new, never heard, three episode podcast collection on movies that are actually better than the books.
Jamie (0:21)
So Knox and I camped out in the pages of three beloved books for this special three part series featuring the movies The Wizard of Oz, Jurassic Park and Bridget Jones' Diary. This podcast episode collection is your reminder that sometimes pretentious readers do get it wrong when they wear merch that says, don't judge a book by its movie.
Knox (0:39)
So in these deep dives, we answer questions like what won and lost the movie? What's the best addition and subtraction from the book? What is something only a camera could capture, which is in our rundown? What did the author think of the film? What is the one thing that we wanted to say something nice? We said, what's the one thing that the book actually does better than the movie?
Jamie (0:56)
Okay, so here is a little sample of our conversations about these three films. The celebration of granny panties. Listen, let's honor that sometimes we want to wear a granny panty that we don't want to wear a thong. We do it for the line, but we'd rather be in a comfy cotton panty. Like that's what we want. Bridget Jones is considered like a fictional British icon along with like James Bond. Like when they make lists in Britain, they consider this fictional character, Harry Potter, James Bond, Bridget Jones.
Knox (1:30)
I thought it was crazy that they put Moaning Myrtle in this, and our first scene was her crying in a bathroom. I was like, what is going on here?
Jamie (1:37)
Listen, she's not Moaning Myrtle yet. It's actually crazy that she's Moaning Myrtle.
Knox (1:41)
In her heart she is. Did she get cast from this? Because I'd be like, that sounds like Moaning Myrtle to me.
Jamie (1:46)
She just sent in this clip and she's like, I can cry in a bathroom.
Knox (1:49)
Yeah, when do I start?
Jamie (1:50)
In the book, The Witch just takes one of Dorothy's shoes and Dorothy gets pissed. She's like, those are my f-ing shoes. And then she throws water on her just because she's pissed about the shoes. And I think there's something really feminist about, don't put your hands on my fancy high heels.
Knox (2:09)
That's some real housewife s*** right there. And then I also saw Over the Rainbow was almost cut for pacing. The executives, the suits were like, it's too slow. It doesn't do anything. Like we need to cut it.
Jamie (2:19)
Witch is crazy. Because it comes in at minute five. We're fed from the beginning.
Knox (2:24)
Are you sitting down right now?
Jamie (2:25)
I am.
Knox (2:26)
Okay.
Men did not enjoy women bicycling. They didn't like it because-
Jamie (2:33)
Because it was sexual or because it was, they were able to go places without them.
Knox (2:38)
Bingo.
Jamie (2:38)
They didn't like.
Knox (2:41)
Some people called it a freedom machine.
Jamie (2:43)
One star for the animatronics. Leave it to Steven, quote, only does missionary Spielberg to make a movie about dinosaurs doll.
Knox (2:54)
Bro, you cannot call Jurassic Park missionary position. That's insane.
Jamie (2:59)
Honestly, that he is so charismatic and has chemistry with literally everyone, male, female, non-binary. It doesn't matter who you are. You are going to be like, Oh my God. Hi.
Knox (3:13)
You can even see Dr. Grant in a second, be like, what's happening right now? Are we about to smash?
Jamie (3:17)
Are we going to smash?
Knox (3:19)
Warren Buffett go in sicko mode and being like, I've been so conservative and careful with my money for all these years. We're going in on dinosaurs. Let's go.
Pterodactyls got them. T-Rex got them. Raptors got them. Triceratops. They're pooping weird. We got them. Come check out. You can play their poop and stuff.
Jamie (3:34)
This time, they're all boys. We make only boys. This movie's better than the book collection is a great way to support our entire small business. Plus we over deliver with more than three hours of modern day Mr. Darcy singing Unchkins and holding on to your butts.
