The Next Big Sport with Bryan Curtis and Tate Frazier

The Dave Chang Show

October 8, 2026

Dave made some Korean fried chicken for The Ringer's Bryan Curtis and Tate Frazier, as well as Chris Ying, so it's time to talk sports. But not the usual sports.

Today on the show, we're identifying the fringe sport that's most likely to leap in the mainstream. Hint, it's not going to be what you think it's going to be, and it's definitely not what he wants, which is quidditch.

Please.

David Chang (0:50)

And we're joined today with two ringer goats.

Welcome to The Dave Chang Show. We have Christopher Ying, we got producer David, we got two ringer staff here, we have Tate Frazier and Bryan Curtis and editor-at-large of the ringer. What does that mean?

Bryan Curtis (1:53)

I don't know yet. Bill told me, editor-at-large, I said, yes, sir. Sounds great.

David Chang (1:57)

You've been an editor-at-large.

Chris Ying (1:58)

I have been an editor-at-large, and I don't know what it is either.

Bryan Curtis (2:01)

Let's figure it out.

Chris Ying (2:02)

They just put us there when it's like, we'll have them do something.

David Chang (2:06)

You have The Press Box and you have a new newsletter coming out tomorrow?

Bryan Curtis (2:09)

It is called Now They Tell Us.

That's like when there's a big NBA trade or signing, and all of a sudden, somebody comes out with an article and has all these details that happened way in the past, now you tell us this stuff. That's the idea.

David Chang (2:23)

Tate Frazier of Ringer Wise Guys and Tailgate. Which was the one with Van?

Tate Frazier (2:30)

That's Ringer Tailgate. College football, it's supposed to be college football.

It lends itself to a lot of different conversations, but a lot of fun.

David Chang (2:40)

We've known each other a long time now.

Tate Frazier (2:42)

Yeah, I mean, back in the day when you first came over, I think I was posting The Dave Chang Show. Yeah, I was the podcast producer.

David Chang (2:48)

Wow, that's crazy how this all happened.

Tate Frazier (2:51)

It's crazy.

David Chang (2:54)

Today, sort of like a sports theme thing, and it was perfect that Bryan was going to join us today because we've been messing around with the idea of what's going to be popular in the future. Because we have an idea that we're working on. We feel very uncomfortable telling the world about what it is, but we do think that it could be something.

The idea also is like, man, what is going to be popular as a sport? I know Cousin Sal and Bill talked about it maybe a month or two ago about sports that kids should play. But I was thinking, we think something culinary related could actually be maybe a sport down the road, but we don't know. This is going to be a conversation. Do you know a lot of the world sports out there?

Bryan Curtis (3:33)

Yeah. I did a little research for this.

Some of these were deep cuts.

Chris Ying (3:38)

That makes one of us.

David Chang (3:41)

I made Chimek. For those that don't know, mekju in Korean is beer, chicken, chimek. That's like a thing, chimek. You can happy hour or if you go to a stadium, you're going to see lots of fried chicken. Clearly, it's based on American Southern style fried chicken, but Korean fried chicken has gone like on an acid trip, somewhere totally different level.

It's awesome. It's double fried. It's got vodka. It's got beer. It's got all kinds of stuff. I've been cooking for a long time making this. I think it came out great.

Part of that is different foods you might be able to eat while watching a sport. Fried chicken, it's not what you normally might think, but in Korea, you definitely get it.

Chris Ying (4:25)

Chicken and beer is an eternal combination.

David Chang (4:29)

I was saying, I didn't know if the chicken was going to be proper. I was just winging. I haven't made Korean fried chicken in a long time. I was like, shit.
