SPEAKER_1 (0:01)

Are you interested in the parts of history that remain a mystery? Do you want to learn more about the historical myths and misconceptions used to prop up belief today?

I'm Nathaniel Lloyd. In my podcast, Historical Blindness, I delve into all of these topics, sharing puzzling tales from the past and examining hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and misremembered events that provide insight into modern politics and religion. New episodes every two weeks find historical blindness on most podcast players and platforms.

Dan McClellan (0:37)

It's got to be demoralizing for his other prophets. For him to be like, you all suck, I'm going to go visit an illegal necromancer to find my dead prophet.

Dan Beecher (0:45)

Yeah, exactly.

Dan McClellan (0:46)

Hey, everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.

Dan Beecher (0:53)

And I'm Dan Beecher.

Dan McClellan (0:54)

And you are listening to the Data Over Dogma podcast where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion and combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things, Dan?

Dan Beecher (1:05)

Oh, man, you know, here's the thing. We're both sick, you and I. Like, you're... In the interview that we're about to play, you're even sicker than you are now. We recorded that a little while ago.

You have not yet fully recovered from that sickness. I'm starting a new sickness.

I'm pretty sure that you gave it to me over the internet.

Dan McClellan (1:27)

Yeah, so I'm coming up the 18 fairways, so I'm getting there, but yeah, I'm still not back to 100%. But yeah, this was almost, what was this, three weeks ago that we recorded this interview?

Dan Beecher (1:38)

Oh my gosh. Don't tell the people how long it's been.

Anyway, coming up is a really cool interview.

Those of you who follow Dan's, you know, all of his social media and whatever, know that we teased a celebrity guest on the show. This is that show. Joel McHale, star of stage and screen. I don't know if he's ever done stage work. I assume he's done stage.

Dan McClellan (2:05)

He likes to do a lot of stuff.

Dan Beecher (2:09)

Yeah. He is gonna be appearing on the show for the first half of the show.

That's really cool. We had a really fun conversation with him. Our patrons get to hear even more of him in the Patrons Only stuff, so that's kind of cool. So you can sign up for that if you want to hear that stuff. And then after that, we're gonna do a chapter and verse.

Dan McClellan (2:31)

Yeah.

So most of the interview was totally unusable. It was just a training wreck.

Dan Beecher (2:39)

I wasn't gonna say it.

Dan McClellan (2:41)

It was a lot of, it was, there's a lot of energy.

Dan Beecher (2:44)

Yeah, we had a great time. Don't get me wrong. It was actually a lot of fun. And you guys are gonna have a lot of fun listening to it.

But we also wanted to get some Bible content into the episode.

Dan McClellan (2:54)

Want to make sure those of you who don't like fun, but like the scholarship are getting yours too. So we talked a little bit in the interview with Joel about the famous story of the necromancer of Endor.

And so the chapter in verse.

Dan Beecher (3:11)

It's about an Ewok witch, you guys. Right. There is literally an Ewok in the Bible.

You're going to have to stay tuned through the whole episode to find out about it.

Dan McClellan (3:21)

And this was not written until after the second episode of Star Trek, right?

Dan Beecher (3:26)

That's right.

Dan McClellan (3:27)

That's what we're talking about.

Dan Beecher (3:28)

Well, no, Star Trek. That's right. The second episode of. Right.

You just blew a lot of people's brains out of their heads.

Dan McClellan (3:35)

I'm playing. I'm totally playing. But yeah, we're going to talk about first Samuel, chapter 28 and the necromancer of Endor and go on a deep dive about what's going on in that chapter because it's so fascinating.

Dan Beecher (3:49)

Yeah, it's a really, really interesting story.

And Joel's in it. This is going to be a fun episode. I think we should just launch in to the interview.

Dan McClellan (3:59)

All right. Let's see it.

For once, we have an interesting show for you today.

Dan Beecher (4:04)

Yeah, we've avoided it for so many episodes, but we had to be interesting at least once.

Joel McHale (4:10)

No longer a sleep meditation app.

Dan Beecher (4:14)

Not anymore.

We're welcoming a special guest. It's a celebrity guest. Even more than Bart Ehrman, I think. Welcome Joel McHale.
