**Ash Kelley** (0:19)
And guess what?

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:21)
It's Pub Day!

**Ash Kelley** (0:23)
Alaina's book came out today.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:26)
It did, August 11th.

**Ash Kelley** (0:27)
I was going to say August 11th, but if you're listening to this, it's like a week later or two weeks later.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:33)
We just wanted to be prepared, you know?

**Ash Kelley** (0:34)
We had to get ahead of it.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:35)
Yeah, so you can get The Butcher Legacy now.

**Ash Kelley** (0:38)
Hell yeah. You can get it at stores. You can get it online. You could download the audiobook. There's a new actor.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:45)
There is a new actor, Cary Hight.

**Ash Kelley** (0:46)
He plays detective one and only John LaRue.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:49)
Hell yeah, and he's so good.

**Ash Kelley** (0:50)
He has a great fucking voice.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:52)
Like, nailed it.

**Ash Kelley** (0:53)
It's like butter, butter, butter. I'm excited. We have tour coming up.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:58)
Yeah.

**Ash Kelley** (0:58)
A little mini book tour.

**Alaina Urquhart** (0:59)
A little mini book tour this week.

**Ash Kelley** (1:01)
Take a little time off after that.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:03)
Yep. We're going to isolate after that.

**Ash Kelley** (1:06)
But you guys won't know because we already were like pre-recordings.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:09)
Yeah.

**Ash Kelley** (1:09)
You'll be fine.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:10)
So you'll be good. You won't feel it.

**Ash Kelley** (1:12)
In fact, you'll be listening to John List, our episode on John List, which we're going to start today.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:17)
Which what a case. It really is. What a case.

**Ash Kelley** (1:22)
So fucked up. And I've seen it. Like, I've heard this case so many times and I've seen it in like pop culture things. Like, what was that? I think it was the Watcher House. Did you ever watch that on Netflix?

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:32)
I didn't watch it.

**Ash Kelley** (1:33)
I watched part of it. I personally didn't enjoy it very much.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:36)
No.

**Ash Kelley** (1:37)
But they do like a take on it in the beginning, which is interesting to like mesh those two stories.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:43)
Yeah, that's interesting.

**Ash Kelley** (1:45)
Yeah. It's a show.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:48)
It's a show. It's a production.

**Ash Kelley** (1:49)
It's a production. It's not really true to the story. I think it's more for entertainment.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:55)
Yeah, that makes sense.

**Ash Kelley** (1:56)
But we're going to tell you the real story today.

**Alaina Urquhart** (1:58)
Let's go.

**Ash Kelley** (1:59)
And this is going to be two parts.

**Alaina Urquhart** (2:00)
I'm horrified, but let's do it.

**Ash Kelley** (2:02)
Let's get into it. So to the people living on Hillside Avenue, and I just said Avenue, we're really off to a good start.

**Alaina Urquhart** (2:09)
We're tired.

**Ash Kelley** (2:10)
Yeah, Avenue in Westfield, New Jersey. The List family had always been something of a strange mystery. When John and Helen List moved their family into the massive 19-room mansion, the area was a safe and friendly place to raise a family. Neighbors got together on the weekends, they'd get together and go bowling, they'd play cards, they'd hold block parties and cookouts. It was like this really close-knit community. Now given how friendly and social everybody was with each other, the lists immediately stood out for being the very opposite of that when they arrived to the neighborhood in 1965
When a neighbor literally just stopped by with a pie to welcome them to the neighborhood, John looked at the neighbor and said, we're not friendly people and we don't like to get involved with neighbors socially. Wow.

**Alaina Urquhart** (2:57)
He just laid that out.

**Ash Kelley** (2:59)
Brother what?

**Alaina Urquhart** (3:00)
Wow.

**Ash Kelley** (3:01)
I missed one of my neighbors bringing cookies by and I felt like a piece of shit. So I literally ordered cute little cards and wrote a card and was like, thank you so much.

**Alaina Urquhart** (3:10)
Well, and also, I think it's weird to not, like I'm not a super sociable person. Nor am I. I don't always want to be around people. No. I love my neighbors and I also love that we all have a little community there that looks out for each other.

**Ash Kelley** (3:26)
That's the thing. I'm kind of new in my neighborhoods. I don't know everybody just yet, but I would never open the door and be like, I'm not friendly. Fuck off.
