The Holy Dunk
Data Over Dogma

What do you know about baptism? Why do Christians do it? Where does it come from? This week, we're exploring the most important baptism of all: that of Jesus. It's clearly a pivotal moment in the narrative of the life of Jesus, but it also presents some pretty important theological problems.

I don't know about y'all, but the older I get, the more important it is to me that I get a good night's sleep.
Dan Beecher (0:05)
You know what? You getting a good night's sleep is important to me too.
Dan McClellan (0:10)
Particularly because I have a bad lower back because of a sports-related injury from when I was younger, but it has always been important to me to have a firm mattress. And when I ordered my Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Luxe California King, it actually didn't go immediately into my bedroom. We actually set it up in the guest room with the intention of then switching out our old mattress afterwards. And there was a night when I was really, really, really sick and I didn't want to bug my wife. So I went and slept in the guest bed and moved the mattress into our bedroom the very next day while I was still sick because I was like, okay, this is a superior mattress and it has the Glaciotex covers, got the Copperflex foam. I'm a hot sleeper. I wake up drenched in sweat sometimes and no longer because this mattress keeps me nice and cool. I always have a good night's sleep on my Brooklyn bedding. California King, playing Confirm Lux.
Dan Beecher (1:09)
Always bragging about that California King. Yeah, look, my Brooklyn bedding, I love it as well. Part of the thing that you need to know about them is that they handcraft every mattress in a factory in Arizona. There's not going to be any middlemen. There's no gimmicks. It just comes straight from them to you. It's a top tier quality, honestly priced mattress made with American craftsmanship. Their whole goal is just to give you a better night's sleep. If you want a Brooklyn bedding mattress, but you're not sure that it'll serve your needs, get one because Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120 night comfort trial. You love it or they'll help you return it or swap it hassle free.

This is pro linebacker TJ Watt and I'm back with YPB by Abercrombie for another active wear drop. My second co-design collection has new shorts and tanks that keep up with all my in-season workouts. And their new Restore collection is a game changer off the field too because even pro athletes like me need rest days. Shop YPB by Abercrombie in the app, online and in stores because your personal best is greater than anything.
Dan Beecher (2:47)
You came really close to doing like a Bill and Ted voice on that part. We're proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.
Dan McClellan (3:02)
Hey everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (3:03)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (3:05)
And this is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation. About the same, how are things today, Dan?
Dan Beecher (3:16)
Rockin and rollin, ready to go. We're gonna take a dip today into the world of baptism, which is, I'm excited about. We are, I tried to plan, look, look, guys, I'm trying to plan things so that they sort of fall on liturgical calendar moments. And like the bat, we're like, now this area of time is sort of when the feast of the baptism of Jesus takes place. Somewhere around here, I did not really look up when. I know it's in January at some point. So we're gonna talk about that for our What's That.
We're going to talk about the baptism of Jesus. And then in the latter half of our show, we're going to look at in a chapter and verse. We're going to look at some crazy rules of war. Yeah, we're getting Deuteronical.
Dan McClellan (4:18)
Deuteronomistic.
Dan Beecher (4:19)
There you go.
Dan McClellan (4:20)
Or Deuteronomic or however, whatever you like. Yeah, but we're going to talk.
Dan Beecher (4:25)
Or his dude-ness or Deuter or...
Dan McClellan (4:27)
Yeah, if you're not into the whole brevity thing. Right. Yeah, that's going to be a heavy discussion.
Dan Beecher (4:34)
It's going to be crazy. You guys, this is... We're just diving into war crimes. So that'll be a lot of fun in the second half of the show. But for now, let's go into our What's That? All right, so last week, Dan, we talked about John the Baptist's death.
