Hello, explorers!

Scotty (0:02)

Hello!

Courtney (0:03)

Welcome back to Mythical Creatures for Kids, the podcast where we discover amazing creatures from stories all around the world.

Today, we're heading to ancient lands to meet a creature that's part eagle, part lion. Are you ready? Yeah!

Scotty (0:23)

Today's creature is the griffin.

Courtney (0:27)

Long ago, people told stories about a powerful creature that guarded treasure and watched over important places.

Imagine you're walking through a golden valley. Mountains rise in the distance, the wind whistles softly, and then a giant shadow passes overhead.

Scotty (0:48)

It's a griffin! But what did the griffin look like?

Courtney (0:53)

The griffin was a mix of two amazing animals. It had the head, beak, wings and sharp eyesight of an eagle, and the body, tail and strong legs of a lion.

That's 50% eagle and 50% lion!

Scotty (1:12)

Now for the big question. Just how big was the griffin?

Courtney (1:15)

Many people imagined griffins to be bigger than a lion, and strong enough to carry heavy treasures. Plus, it was said to have a wingspan of 20 feet, which is the length of two large cars.

Scotty (1:28)

Very cool! Here are some fun facts about the griffin.

Courtney (1:33)

In Egypt, griffins were thought to guard the sun, and were often seen protecting gold, jewels, and treasures. In Greek mythology, they were symbols of loyalty, and were often described as watching over gods and goddesses, even pulling the golden chariots of the sun god Apollo. Because the lion was thought to be the king of the animals, and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be the king of all creatures.

Ancient stories claim that the griffins built their nests using real gold nuggets. Some experts suggest the ancient Greeks might have imagined griffins after seeing fossils of beat dinosaurs like the proto-ceratops. According to old stories, a griffin's claw was thought to have healing powers. It was also believed that one of its feathers could restore sight to the blind.

Scotty (2:29)

Let's play a quick imagination game.

Courtney (2:34)

You're hiking up a mountain trail. Just then you discover a giant golden egg.

It's bigger than a beach ball. Suddenly a friendly griffin lands beside it.

The griffin looks worried. Oh no, the egg has rolled away from its nest. Do you help push the egg up the hill? Or ask the griffin for a ride back down the mountain?

Scotty (2:59)

I'll help push the egg.

Courtney (3:02)

Thanks for your help.

Scotty (3:04)

Here's a griffin joke. What is a griffin's favorite name? What? Hide and Screech.

Courtney (3:12)

People love griffin stories because they combine two of the most powerful animals, the eagle and the lion.

Together they create a creature that was brave, strong and very loyal. And guess what?

Scotty (3:25)

What?

Courtney (3:26)

Griffins are still being used in logos, coat of arms, and are on gargoyles of buildings even today.

Scotty (3:33)

That's all for today's Sky High Adventure on Mythical Creatures for Kids!

Courtney (3:40)

Next time we'll meet another amazing creature.

Scotty (3:42)

Maybe one that lives in the sea, or one that goes in moonlight.

Courtney (3:46)

Until then, keep imagining, keep exploring, and remember, there's always another adventure waiting just beyond the next mountain. Bye explorers!

Scotty (3:57)

Goodbye!
