The official story of the Greek frappé begins in September 1957 at the Thessaloniki International Fair, where a Nestlé booth was demonstrating an instant chocolate drink shaken in cocktail shakers.

So, picture this scenario, right? You are in the middle of a just absolutely brutal workday.

SPEAKER_2 (0:07)

Oh, the worst.

SPEAKER_1 (0:08)

Like, maybe you're working a booth at a massive crowded trade event or something. You've been on your feet for hours, you're talking to hundreds of people, and you finally, finally get a 10-minute break.

SPEAKER_2 (0:18)

Right, that glorious 10 minutes.

SPEAKER_1 (0:20)

Exactly. And you desperately, like on a visceral level, you just need a coffee.

SPEAKER_2 (0:25)

I know that feeling all too well. Right.

SPEAKER_1 (0:27)

So you have your trusty jar of instant coffee, sitting right there in your bag. But when you look around the break area, there is a catastrophic problem.

SPEAKER_2 (0:36)

Let me guess, no hot water.

SPEAKER_1 (0:38)

None.

The kettle is empty. The urn is broken, whatever the situation is. You are entirely out of luck. You only have cold water and like maybe a few ice cubes.

SPEAKER_2 (0:49)

Which is devastating.

SPEAKER_1 (0:50)

It is. Because most of us would probably just, you know, sigh, put the jar away, and suffer through the rest of the afternoon feeling totally miserable.

SPEAKER_2 (0:58)

Yeah, because it feels like a rigid rule of physics for most of us, right? Coffee requires heat. You need heat to extract the flavor and to dissolve the granules.

SPEAKER_1 (1:06)

Right, exactly.

SPEAKER_2 (1:07)

So without heat, the equation is broken, and you just assume you're going to end up with this gritty, unpalatable mess.

SPEAKER_1 (1:13)

That is the totally normal reaction. But you're listening to The Deep Dive, and today we're actually taking that exact, desperate, hot, waterless moment and tracing how it allegedly birthed the Greek Frappé.

SPEAKER_2 (1:26)

Which is such an amazing story.

SPEAKER_1 (1:27)

It really is. And I'm your host, and joined by our resident expert, we are jumping right into this. Because this isn't just a story about a makeshift caffeine fix.

SPEAKER_2 (1:36)

No, not at all.

SPEAKER_1 (1:38)

We are looking at a drink that relies on highly specific industrial chemistry, a beverage that kind of accidentally defined post-war Mediterranean outdoor culture and paved the way for modern iced coffee globally.

SPEAKER_2 (1:49)

Yeah, it really changed everything.

SPEAKER_1 (1:51)

So today's mission is to explore how cultural stables are actually born. And spoiler alert, it usually involves throwing the established rules completely out the window.

SPEAKER_2 (2:01)

It really does. And you know, the frappé is the perfect lens for this kind of analysis because, well, it seems so incredibly simple on the surface.

SPEAKER_1 (2:08)

Right. It's just instant coffee.

SPEAKER_2 (2:10)

Exactly. We are talking about instant coffee, water and agitation, just shaking it up. Yet the physical science behind its towering signature foam, it requires a very specific set of variables.

And honestly, the history of who actually shook that first glass is a lot messier than the official corporate story suggests.

SPEAKER_1 (2:28)

Well, let's start with that official story, because honestly, the setting alone is pretty fascinating.

SPEAKER_2 (2:34)

Oh, it's a great setting.

SPEAKER_1 (2:36)

So the widely accepted narrative drops us right into September of 1957 at the Thessaloniki International Fair in Greece.

SPEAKER_2 (2:43)

Right, which was a massive post-World War II economic showcase.

SPEAKER_1 (2:47)

Right, so you have this Nestlé representative named Yannis Strytsas, and he's working this busy booth showcasing a brand new product for kids.

It's an instant chocolate beverage. And the big gimmick for the trade show is that it's produced by mixing chocolate powder with milk and then shaking it really vigorously in a classic cocktail shaker.

SPEAKER_2 (3:07)

Which, by the way, is a very clever theatrical presentation for a trade fair in the 1950s.

SPEAKER_1 (3:12)

Oh, totally.

SPEAKER_2 (3:13)

You want that kinetic action, right? The noise, the movement, just to draw the eye of people walking past the booth. The cocktail shaker provided that perfect visual hook.

SPEAKER_1 (3:22)

Yeah, it's all about the spectacle. So, Dreatzis has an employee working with him named Dimitris Vakondios.

SPEAKER_2 (3:28)

Right, the guy who becomes the legend.

SPEAKER_1 (3:30)

Exactly.

So, Vakondios goes on his break. He wants his usual instant coffee. But just like our scenario at the top of the show, he cannot find any hot water.

SPEAKER_2 (3:40)

The tragedy strikes.

SPEAKER_1 (3:41)

The tragedy.

Out of sheer necessity, he decides to improvise. He grabs one of those cocktail shakers meant for the kids' chocolate drink, throws in his instant coffee, some cold water, some ice cubes, and he just shakes it out of sheer frustration.

SPEAKER_2 (3:55)

I love the idea of him just angrily shaking this coffee. Right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:59)

And according to the corporate lore, when he opened that shaker, boom, he had invented the Greek Frappé.
