Kids say things, any parent will tell you that.

**Forrest Burgess** (1:18)
Those kind of things? Yeah, sometimes.

**Scott Philbrook** (1:20)
Yeah, those kinds of things. A two-year-old will stare at an empty corner and then announce something that stands the hair up on the back of your neck, and then go right back to playing with their blocks. Most of the time, you let it go.

**Forrest Burgess** (1:31)
Well, then sometimes you can't let it go because it won't let you go.
But then an explanation is needed for everybody. It's something you want to tell your child to reassure them and make sure that they don't have nightmares. But what if the thing starts giving you nightmares? That's where there's a detail in the story that no two-year-old or even two-and-a-half-year-old, I know they grow up fast, would even consider. That's an interesting aspect of the story we're going to hear. We've talked in the past, actually, we just did before we started the session about a good friend of ours talking about what they called the Purple Man in their bedroom.

**Scott Philbrook** (2:12)
Their kids, yeah.

**Forrest Burgess** (2:13)
Yeah, their kids described one when they were young, years apart, same bedroom, when the older kid moved into her own bedroom and the younger kid moved into that bedroom, and both described seeing the same Purple Man. So our friends were like, okay, that's interesting. Now it's beyond imagination, perhaps, in that, what do you tell a child? Well, you don't want to scare them like, oh yeah, that's the Purple Being from another dimension that visits, but you go to sleep now. And so you don't want to do that, but you have to, for your own mind, come up with some kind of explanation.

**Scott Philbrook** (2:49)
Yeah. Well, this week's letter has exactly one of those kinds of details. It comes out of a family viewing of a grandmother who'd passed only a month before. One of those evenings at the funeral home where everybody's holding it together for everybody else, which Forrest, you and I know only too well after the past couple of years. But in this letter, there's a little one there too. Far too young to understand any of it. Like all funerals, there's always some kids running around that aren't really sure what's going on. So the adults take turns keeping them busy in a room down the hall.

**Forrest Burgess** (3:18)
Sue, you were fairly recently, within the last two years at a funeral, where there were young children.

**Scott Philbrook** (3:22)
Yeah, there were lots of little kids at my grandmother's funeral. You know, they were all, we had, they were in a room that they were gathered in before the service. I think they all wound up coming in to the service itself, but it wasn't the kind of service where there was a viewing or anything like that.

**Forrest Burgess** (3:35)
Right, right.

**Scott Philbrook** (3:36)
But there's a point at which, you know, the adults are all working to sort of keep the kids happy, who are generally, especially if they're really young, just bored out of their minds and trying to figure out while everyone is standing in a room and not doing anything fun.

**Forrest Burgess** (3:48)
There's a big box. Yeah, and people seem sad. What's going on?

**Scott Philbrook** (3:52)
Well, this was before we got in there, but yeah, there's all that stuff too.

**Forrest Burgess** (3:56)
I just quickly asked that because how do you think that the kids reacted or did they even notice? Did they have any awareness of what was going on from your POV?

**Scott Philbrook** (4:05)
Oh yeah, once you get into the service, you definitely, you know.

**Forrest Burgess** (4:08)
The kids did. I mean, the kids were in the room.

**Scott Philbrook** (4:10)
If you're communicative and you're talking and listening and an age old enough for that, sure, you pick up what everyone's talking about.
