Lindsay had been fascinated by the house for as long as she could remember. It stood only a few blocks from where she grew up, a huge Victorian home sent back from the street behind old trees and an iron fence. It had a wide front porch, tall, narrow windows, elaborate trim and a small turret that made it look different from every other house in the neighborhood. When she was little, she called it the Castle House. Whenever her family drove past it, she tried to look through the windows. She imagined enormous bedrooms, secret staircases and Christmas trees that reached all the way to the ceiling. In her mind, people who lived in houses like that wore beautiful clothes, had parties in the parlor, and came down the staircase every morning as though they lived in another century. At some point, her mother told her the house was more than a hundred years old, which only made her more interested. She began wondering who had built it, how many families had lived there, and what the rooms looked like when everything inside was new. By the time she reached high school, she understood that the real history was probably less romantic than what she had imagined as a child. She also knew the house had a reputation. People in town said it was haunted, although nobody ever seemed to have one specific story. Someone had heard footsteps upstairs. Somebody else knew a woman who claimed she had seen a figure in one of the windows. She heard versions involving former owners, servants, children, and people who may or may not have died there. Most of the stories contradicted one another, which made her skeptical of the details, even though she loved hearing them. The house itself changed hands several times while she was growing up. Eventually, it was restored and opened as a small spa and bed and breakfast, with rooms that could also be rented for showers, meetings, and private events. When she was 17, she saw that they were hiring part-time help and applied immediately. The job itself wasn't glamorous. She cleaned guest rooms, carried laundry, vacuumed hallways, restocked bathrooms, and helped reset rooms after events. None of that mattered during those first few weeks because she was finally inside the house she'd spent most of her childhood staring at from the street. Some parts were exactly what she'd hoped for. The front staircase curved upward from the foyer beneath a stained glass window. Several rooms still had original woodwork and fireplaces, and the high ceilings made even the smaller spaces feel impressive. The owners had decorated with antiques, some original to the house, and others collected because they fit the period. She loved hearing what was known about the home's history. It had been built in the late 1800s for a wealthy businessman and his family, and had passed through several owners before eventually being converted for commercial use. Some of the rooms had changed purposes many times over the years, but much of the basic layout remained intact.
The second floor included a sitting room filled with older furniture, books, portraits, and personal items that had been donated over the years. There was nothing obviously frightening about it, but she never liked being in there alone. One portrait in particular seemed to catch her eye every time she entered, even though she couldn't have explained why.
She told herself that was exactly what happened when someone already knew a house had a haunted reputation. Everything started looking suspicious. During the day, she rarely thought about it. There were guests coming and going, phones ringing, co-workers talking, and music playing downstairs. Even the upper floors felt comfortable when the house was busy.
Once the last appointment was finished and the other employees began leaving, the house seemed much larger. Sounds traveled differently when the rooms were empty, and she became aware of things she never noticed during the day. A board would creak two rooms away, pipes shifted inside the walls, and wind pressed against the old windows. At first, she enjoyed it. Being alone in the house felt almost like getting private access to a place she'd always wanted to explore. She could take her time cleaning the upstairs rooms, and occasionally stop at one of the windows she'd stared up at when she was a child. Then she started hearing someone talk. The first time, she was cleaning a small room on the third floor that was used for yoga classes and private sessions. She was putting away supplies when she heard what sounded like a man's voice from somewhere below. She couldn't understand what he said, but she assumed one of her co-workers was still downstairs, so she called out that she would be finished in a few minutes.
