Bitcoin ATMs were once one of the clearest signs that cryptocurrency was escaping the internet and entering the real world.

Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Deep Dive. In October 2013, something very strange arrived at a coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. It weighed around 750 pounds. It had a touchscreen, a cash acceptor, and even a palm scanner. And unlike every other ATM people had used before it, this machine wasn't connected to a bank account. It was connected to Bitcoin. The Robocoin machine installed inside Wave's coffee house is generally recognized as the world's first operational Bitcoin ATM. At the time, Bitcoin was still worth only around a couple of hundred dollars. The Silk Road had just been shut down. Cryptocurrency was overwhelmingly associated with computer enthusiasts and underground internet markets. And buying Bitcoin was considerably more complicated than opening an app and pressing a button. The machine promised to change that. Instead of registering with an online exchange, linking a bank account and potentially waiting days to move money, somebody could walk into a coffee shop, insert Canadian dollars and receive Bitcoin directly into a wallet. Its operators described transactions taking minutes rather than days. The palm scanner was there partly to enforce transaction limits under Canadian anti-money laundering rules. But aesthetically, the whole thing looked like Bitcoin had somehow escaped from the internet and entered the physical world.
Bitcoin finally had an ATM and people loved the idea. What followed was one of the less frequently discussed infrastructure booms in cryptocurrency history. One machine became hundreds, hundreds became thousands. Bitcoin ATMs appeared in petrol stations, shopping centers, convenience stores and supermarkets. They were particularly successful in the United States, where operators realized there was a large potential market of people who either preferred cash, couldn't easily access cryptocurrency exchanges, or simply found inserting banknotes into a familiar looking machine easier than navigating wallets, exchanges and bank transfers. By the height of the expansion, there were close to 40,000 cryptocurrency ATMs around the world. That is how we eventually arrive at Bitcoin Depot. Bitcoin Depot was founded in 2016, only around three years after that original Vancouver machine. Its entire proposition was essentially the original Bitcoin ATM dream taken to industrial scale. Put Bitcoin access everywhere ordinary people already spend cash. And they became extremely good at it. The company expanded aggressively throughout North America. Its machines appeared in convenience stores, petrol stations, pharmacies and supermarkets.
By the end of 2024, Bitcoin Depot reported approximately 8,500 kiosks. By the end of 2025, that had risen to roughly 9,700 machines operating across the United States, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong. Bitcoin Depot claimed approximately 23% of the American Bitcoin ATM market. It had machines in around 1,100 Circle K stores alone and additional technology allowing people to convert cash into Bitcoin through thousands of retail checkout locations. Between the company's launch in July 2016 and the end of 2025, Bitcoin Depot says more than 4 million transactions passed through its systems, representing approximately 3.4 billion dollars in total transaction value. This wasn't some tiny crypto startup operating machines in the back of obscure shops. Bitcoin Depot became publicly traded on Nasdaq after completing a SPAC transaction in 2023 At one stage, its market capitalization approached roughly 400 million dollars. And strangely, the company was still expanding right before everything went wrong.
During 2025, Bitcoin Depot acquired competitors, added hundreds of machines, and entered new international markets. Its filings show revenue of approximately 615 million dollars for the year, up from roughly 574 million dollars during 2024
It generated around 34 million dollars of operating cash flow. From the outside, Bitcoin ATMs didn't look dead. Then came 2026, and suddenly the economics changed frighteningly quickly. The underlying problem wasn't actually Bitcoin. It was fraud. Bitcoin ATMs possess one characteristic scammers absolutely love. Once cash is converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to another wallet, reversing the transaction can be extremely difficult. A scammer doesn't need to understand how the physical machine works. They simply need to convince somebody else to use it. The pattern has become depressingly familiar. Someone receives a telephone call supposedly from their bank. Or, the police. Or the tax authority. Or a technology company. They are told their bank account has been compromised, that they owe money, that somebody has stolen their identity or that their savings are in danger. Then comes the urgent instruction. Withdraw cash. Find a Bitcoin ATM. Scan this QR code. Deposit the money. And once the transaction happens, the victim may discover that the QR code wasn't protecting their money at all. It was the attacker's cryptocurrency wallet. The scale became enormous. According to America's FBI, more than 13,400 complaints involving cryptocurrency kiosks were reported during 2025, with losses exceeding $388 million.
That represented a 58% increase in the number of victims reported losses in a single year. More than half of the complaints involved people over 50 who collectively reported losses exceeding $302 million.
