Most people who enter this industry arrive with something that goes beyond ambition. They want to be great at this. Not just competent, not just well compensated, but genuinely great. And for the ones with real ability, the early years tend to confirm that something is possible. Maybe you catch a macro inflection correctly. Maybe you understand a structural trend before others do. Maybe you build conviction during a difficult period and are rewarded for it. Whatever the path, you arrive at your first meaningful success.

This is the local max.

The local max matters because it changes your relationship with yourself. Until then, investing was mostly aspiration and effort. Now there is evidence. Your framework works. Your instincts may actually be real. People begin taking your ideas more seriously. Your confidence expands. Your ambitions grow alongside it. And it is from that peak that a larger dream becomes visible for the first time. You begin to see your big max.

Running serious capital, building a firm with a real identity, becoming an investor whose view of the world actually shapes how others think about it. You can see it from where you are standing. It no longer feels impossible. It feels within reach. Early success changes what feels possible. And that expansion of possibility is one of the most energizing experiences in an investing career.

So naturally, you push forward. You work harder, you take greater responsibility. And then, almost inevitably, you encounter point C, the dip.

Point C arrives differently for everyone. Sometimes it is a brutal drawdown. Sometimes it is a period where your process stops working in the environment that once rewarded it. Sometimes it is getting passed over or pushed out, or simply watching peers surpass you while your own confidence deteriorates.

What makes point C so psychologically difficult is that it comes after momentum. You were ascending, you could already picture the larger future, and then suddenly, uncertainty returns and the path becomes unclear again. This is where many investing careers quietly split apart.

Most people retreat back to the local max. They return to the last version of themselves that felt validated and slowly begin narrowing their ambitions without fully admitting it to themselves. They become more defensive, intellectually, more focused on preserving identity than expanding it. The retreat usually sounds rational while it is happening. Protect the capital, stay within your strengths, do not force things. All of that contains truth. But over time, the local max becomes the ceiling.

What the chart is showing is that C is not a detour from the path to Big Max. It is the path. There is no route that bypasses it. The only question is whether you move through it or back away from it. The investors who move through it are not the ones who avoided fear or pain at C. They are the ones who recognized the setback for what it was and stayed with it long enough for it to teach them something. They found, in that uncomfortable period, the people willing to think honestly alongside them rather than simply manage their confidence back toward familiar ground.

The temporary setback is often not evidence that the larger vision was wrong. It is frequently part of the process required to grow into it. The version of you that emerges from C is not the same investor who arrived at the local max in those early years. Less fragile now because point C stripped away illusions you did not realize you were carrying. The capital you eventually run, the firm you build, the perspective you develop, none of it would have been possible without passing through the thing that felt at the time like it was ending everything. From there, you begin climbing toward your big max, and at some point, the cycle repeats. The big max eventually becomes another local max. What once felt extraordinary slowly becomes normal. The career you once imagined from a distance becomes the life you're living. And from that new peak, another horizon begins to appear. A larger challenge, a deeper level of mastery, a broader vision for what this career and life could still become. And somewhere ahead, another Point C is waiting. But by then, something inside you has changed. You have been through enough cycles of confidence and doubt, of progress and stillness, to stop mistaking difficulty for failure. Over time, you realize that Point C was never where the dream ended. It was where a new version of you began.
