The Bear Who Slashed
Tooth & Claw: True Stories of Animal Attacks
October 1, 2026
Wes channels the seasonal spirit of Halloween and recounts the story of a black bear who might have watched a few too many scary movies. Or maybe (certainly) it was just an animal doing what came natural.

One other thing is the Pokemon Blastoise, you know?
Jeff Larson (0:17)
Yeah.
Mike Smith (0:18)
I think it's supposed to be pronounced, tortoise is spelled like blast, blastus, like O-I-S-E on the end of tortoise, right?
Wes Larson (0:26)
You think it's supposed to be blastus?
Mike Smith (0:30)
Doesn't it? Like the, you understand logically what I'm trying to say, right? It sounds stupid, but I think that's where they got the name from.
Jeff Larson (0:40)
Huh.
The way they spell it. Yeah. Links up with tortoise.
Mike Smith (0:45)
Right.
Jeff Larson (0:46)
Blastoise.
Mike Smith (0:48)
All right.
Jeff Larson (0:49)
That's a great, that's a great thought.
Mike Smith (0:51)
Yeah.
Jeff Larson (0:52)
Hello, everyone. Welcome to a subscription episode of Tooth & Claw Podcast. And this is going to be the best subscription episode we've ever done.
Mike Smith (1:04)
It's a lot of pressure. I can't wait.
Wes Larson (1:08)
All right.
Jeff Larson (1:08)
Calling, calling Wes's shot. It's like when the NBA player passes to someone else, and then they put up the three sign, assuming the guy will make the shot.
Mike Smith (1:20)
Yeah.
Wes Larson (1:21)
All right. You know, I'm going to do my best.
Yeah. I'm doing the subscriber episode this week. I'm just trying to kind of slot myself in every once in a while. You know, Jeff just did a main with our panda episode. I turned you off. My AC turned on.
Mike Smith (1:40)
Haunted. Uh-oh. It is spooky season.
Wes Larson (1:43)
Oh, wow. All right. It's off.
Mike Smith (1:45)
I bet that's my mom's ghost.
Wes Larson (1:47)
It very well could be. She's always trying to regulate the temperature.
Jeff doesn't even believe in ghosts.
Jeff Larson (1:53)
I don't know how we'll settle that. Right. Of course, I'll take that bet.
Wes Larson (1:56)
How are you guys doing?
Jeff Larson (1:58)
Ask something else. Good until you brought my mom up.
Wes Larson (2:04)
You guys excited for the official start of spooky season? This is going to come out on October 1st, which I do think is the official start for most people.
Mike Smith (2:14)
Yeah.
Jeff Larson (2:14)
That's when it starts, huh?
Mike Smith (2:16)
I've been going to town on candy corn. Tell me this. I've been trying to exercise a little bit of self-discipline, and I ate almost an entire bag of candy corn just over the course of one day.
Do you think it's more or less self-control that I exhibited by leaving one single candy corn left in the bag?
Wes Larson (2:33)
That sounds like a very Wes Larson thing to do, where I always leave a bite of food.
Mike Smith (2:38)
One little morsel.
Wes Larson (2:39)
But I think it's window dressing if you're just leaving one.
Mike Smith (2:45)
It's the way I look at it. It's like I might as well finish it if I went that. We're already here at the finish line.
Jeff Larson (2:51)
No, yeah, I agree with that. Like when I ruptured my patella, I took Oxycontin twice a day for two months.
And I didn't need it that second month, but I kept taking it. But I had about three pills left.
Wes Larson (3:05)
Because you like to finish things.
Jeff Larson (3:07)
I had about three pills left and I stopped.
Wes Larson (3:11)
Really?
Mike Smith (3:11)
Wow.
Jeff Larson (3:12)
Yeah. That's impressive. So then I was like, I think that's the exact same as the candy corn.
Wes Larson (3:16)
Yeah, it's a mental victory.
Jeff Larson (3:18)
Did you crash out for like four days? Because you didn't have that last candy corn.
Mike Smith (3:23)
So like we are talking.
Jeff Larson (3:25)
That's what happened to me.
Mike Smith (3:26)
Moments ago that this scenario occurred. So I'll let you know how the next four days go. But I'm going to be punching holes and walls.
Jeff Larson (3:32)
Yeah, if you crash out, that means you have good control.
Mike Smith (3:35)
Okay.
Wes Larson (3:35)
Oh, Mike, I sabotaged myself this candy corn season because I've been having a bit of a candy problem lately. I've been eating a lot of candy. And so I did a Google search and I was like, hey, what candy is the healthiest? Because I'm going to eat candy. So I just want to figure out if I'm going to eat it, like what's the best possible option.
Jeff Larson (3:55)
Oh, that one sucked.
Wes Larson (3:56)
The least healthy was candy corn. Oh, it's like crazy how much sugar they pack in the candy corn.
