That's right. All right guys, I'm Lisa Bilyeu and welcome to Women of Impact.

You say there are three foods that we should avoid like cocaine.

What are those three foods and why on earth is it so dangerous?

Casey Means (3:55)

The three foods that I don't think are fit for human consumption are ultra-processed, industrially-fined seed oils, ultra-processed, refined grains, and ultra-processed, industrially-manufactured added sugars. These are foods that are brand new to our American food supply in the course of human history.

Industrial seed oils didn't even really exist 100 years ago. Now it's the predominant source of calories in the American diet. And these are the backbone of processed foods, which are now making up about 70% of the calories that Americans are eating today. So these three ingredients, if you look at any processed food on the shelves, you're gonna see one of the three of them. And what we know from the data is that the more processed food we're eating, which is filled with added sugars, refined grains, or refined seed oils, the sicker we're getting, for every 10% of calories that we eat from processed foods, every increasing 10%, we have a 16% higher chance of dying, based on studies looking at populations eating ultra-processed food. So we need to get rid of them from our diet. I like to say that ultra-processed foods are an experiment in human history that have totally failed, and we need to relegate them to the annals of history. So added sugars, so these are not the sugars that we're finding in fruit, which are of course surrounded by fiber and micronutrients and polyphenols and all these wonderful things and we're going to adjust them slowly and they're in a limited amount in whole foods. Those are fine. We're talking about essentially science experiments that have been created like high fructose corn syrup. So high fructose corn syrup is now ubiquitous in processed foods, children's foods, sodas, and this was created in 1970s. This is brand new, less than 55 years old, and our consumption of fructose has gone up by some measures 3,000% since high fructose corn syrup was wrought into the food supply. We actually federally subsidized the production of corn, which has turned into a sugar that we know leads to detrimental health outcomes. And it's just in so many different processed foods that are on our shelves. The reason that it is so problematic is because, unlike so many of the calories we eat which make us feel full and promote satiety, fructose is different.
