A major Wall Street analyst is projecting an 80% probability that Tesla and SpaceX merge into a single corporate entity within a year and a half.

Right, which, I mean, you really have to look at through the lens of the recent SpaceX initial public offering. They listed under the ticker SPCX, and it just immediately became the largest IPO in financial history.
So the central question you have to ask when looking at this 80% projection is, well, why does it make financial and structural sense for an automaker to merge with an aerospace company?

The public listing is really the foundation for everything happening with these two companies right now. We are looking at a situation where SpaceX offered shares at $135, and they raised $75 billion right out of the gate.

Which is just an absurd amount of capital.

It is, and they achieved an initial valuation of just reaching $1.8 trillion.
The stock demand actually pushed that peak over $2.2 trillion shortly after trading began. You just rarely see that volume of capital moving into a single equity event.

It alters the gravity of the entire financial market, honestly. When you have a $2 trillion asset materializing on the public exchanges, institutional money managers basically have to rebalance everything else they hold just to make room for it. Right. But what actually stood out in the filings wasn't just the institutional appetite. It was how they handled the retail side of the offering.

Yeah, that was highly unusual. 30% of the entire offering was directed specifically to retail investors through platforms like Robinhood and E-Trade.

Which is basically unheard of.

Totally. That is a massive allocation for an offering of this size.
Normally, retail investors get whatever scraps are left after the large pension funds and investment banks take their cut, but here, the company deliberately funneled billions of dollars worth of stock directly to everyday brokerage accounts.

And that retail allocation completely altered the trading dynamics for Tesla's stock.

You have to look at the historical psychology of the retail investor to understand why that happened. Because for years, ordinary investors had absolutely no way to buy a piece of SpaceX.

It was completely walled off.

Yeah, strictly private, locked up by venture capital and private equity.
So retail investors basically used Tesla as their proxy for that entire corporate ecosystem. If you believed in the engineering teams or the leadership or the overarching goals of colonizing Mars and building AI, you bought Tesla stock.

It was literally the only publicly traded vehicle available to get exposure to that halo effect.

Exactly. Tesla was absorbing a premium for businesses it didn't even own. But once SpaceX listed as a public entity, you saw a direct and immediate shift.
Retail investors looked at their portfolios and realized, oh, I no longer have to use an automotive company to bet on orbital rockets.
