All right, let's find our places in Psalm 34 Psalm 34 this morning.
This is a Psalm of David, and it chronologically falls in right after where we were last week with Psalm 56 And so we'll catch some of the context as we get into the message. But Psalm 56 is a psalm of prayer, is a psalm of pleading with God, what time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. And then look at the heading of this psalm, a psalm of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, who drove him away and he departed. So this is a psalm where David is rejoicing because he has been delivered out of those circumstances from last week. So let's pick it up. Verse number one of Psalm 34 David says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear thereof and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. They looked upon him and were lightened. Their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him and delivereth them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Oh, fear the Lord, ye saints, for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Come ye children, hearken unto me and I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is he that desireth life and loveth many days that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the Lord is against them that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry and the Lord hearth and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto all them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones, not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants, and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. So the title this morning is this, taste the blessings of trusting God. Taste the blessings of trusting God. Let's pray and ask the Lord's help this morning. Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you this morning. Lord, I need your help this morning. I know that in my own strength, I cannot do anything, Lord. I'm trusting that you would work, that you would use your word to speak to hearts and lives this morning. Lord, we pray, Lord, that you would guide us, you would direct us, help us, Lord, to not only know the truths of your word, but to experience them, to know them, to taste them. Lord, we pray for your grace this morning, for your glory in Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
If you were here last week and if you weren't, I would encourage, we'll cover a little bit of it just in the context, but you could go back and catch the sermon online to be able to listen to that. From Psalm 56, where David was, I'm surrounded by enemies, be merciful unto me, O God. Man daily would swallow me up. He's in terror. He's in fear. And he's saying, what time I'm afraid? I will trust in you. I trust in thee, Lord. I'm terrified of the circumstances that I'm in. But as we get to Psalm 34, we could say it this way. David's singing a different tune. The key has changed from minor to major, right? The music has changed from something that is sorrowful to something that is joyful. He's singing a song of praise instead of being filled with fear. David's no longer afraid. No, it's clear from the text. He's praising God. He's excited. He's thankful. He's rejoicing in what the Lord has done.
And so let's get it. Where had David been that caused him to be first filled with fear and now filled with such thankfulness? Well, just a short while before, David was in a very dark and hopeless situation because he had been living by fear. Instead of fearing God, he had been fearing Saul. Instead of fearing God, he had been fearing the Philistines. And he had been making choices based on what he was afraid of instead of what God wanted him to do. And so he knew Saul is going to get me. Saul was his father-in-law, and because David was serving God, Saul hated him, and Saul was trying to kill him, so David took off running.
