Wow, you guys have been sending in some really fascinating stuff this week. I mean, a lot of it, a lot to unpack.
SPEAKER_2 (0:04)
Yeah, it seems like every time you turn around, there's another headline about trade and tariffs.
Costa Athanasiou (0:09)
Yeah, tariffs. And, you know, it can be hard to sort of cut through all that noise, right? I mean, figure out what it all really means. Like, not just for, you know, the big players, but for you, for me.
SPEAKER_2 (0:21)
Exactly. I mean, we're talking about something that has the potential to, well, it's already kind of shaken things up. On the global financial stage, I mean, you've sent us all kinds of sources and articles really digging into these US tariff changes, this whole new structure they're talking about.
Costa Athanasiou (0:38)
Yeah, back in April 2025
SPEAKER_2 (0:40)
Right, 2025 Feels like a while ago now.
Costa Athanasiou (0:42)
Yeah, well, time flies, right? So we need to kind of break this down, right? Get a grip on the specifics of what's going on, and then, you know, zoom out and see that bigger picture.
SPEAKER_2 (0:53)
Exactly. And that's really the point of this deep dive, isn't it?
Costa Athanasiou (0:56)
It is.
SPEAKER_2 (0:56)
To help you understand just how significant all this is.
Costa Athanasiou (0:59)
Okay, so where do we start? Well, I guess the big attention grabber was that new baseline tariff, right?
SPEAKER_2 (1:05)
Yeah, 10%.
Costa Athanasiou (1:06)
Yeah. Well, almost everything, pretty much everything the US imports. And that that kicked in, what, April 5th?
SPEAKER_2 (1:14)
That's right. April 5th, 2025 That was sort of the first wave.
Costa Athanasiou (1:17)
But then it gets a bit more complicated, right? I mean, it's not just a flat 10% across the board. There's these, what are they calling them? Reciprocal tariffs?
SPEAKER_2 (1:26)
Yeah, the reciprocal tariffs, those are the ones aimed at countries that have a fairly large trade surplus with the US. So those kicked in a little bit later, April 9th. And we're talking about a hefty 34% on goods coming from China, and then 20% on anything coming from the European Union. And remember, these are on top of any pre-existing tariffs, like we've already got that 25% on cars, steel, aluminum.
Costa Athanasiou (1:51)
Right, so it's like they're piling on.
SPEAKER_2 (1:53)
Exactly, adding layers, which has a big impact on the overall cost of doing business, of trading.
Costa Athanasiou (1:59)
Right. Okay, so deep breath. Where are we going with all this?
SPEAKER_2 (2:04)
Well, our goal here in this Deep Dive is to kind of wade through all this. I mean, all the sources you've sent us are amazing. We're talking news articles, expert analysis, all sorts of perspectives.
Costa Athanasiou (2:17)
Yeah, and we want to pull out those crucial insights, the stuff that really helps us understand what's going on.
SPEAKER_2 (2:22)
Right, like what are the economic fallout? And I know we saw some pretty immediate reactions. I mean, as soon as this was announced, the markets, the global markets just didn't seem very happy.
Costa Athanasiou (2:32)
No, not at all.
SPEAKER_2 (2:33)
So we want to get into that. And then there's the geopolitical side of things, right? Like, what's the strategy here? Is there a grand plan?
Costa Athanasiou (2:41)
Right, what are the underlying motivations, the bigger game?
SPEAKER_2 (2:44)
Exactly. And it's always helpful to put things in context, right? I mean, how does this all fit into the kind of the historical sweep of global trade?
Costa Athanasiou (2:53)
And we want to do all of this without overwhelming you with too much information.
SPEAKER_2 (2:57)
Right, give you that clear perspective so you can really grasp what's happening. Absolutely.
Costa Athanasiou (3:02)
Okay, so, global markets. I guess the reaction was pretty swift, wasn't it? Like, as soon as these terrorists were out there, it was almost like the world hit the brakes.
SPEAKER_2 (3:14)
Yeah, very quickly. And across the board, I mean, you pointed out some of those sharp declines, particularly in the Asian markets.
Costa Athanasiou (3:21)
Yeah, like Tokyo's Nike, the Cospi and Seoul, Sydney's S&P, SX200, they all took a tumble.
SPEAKER_2 (3:28)
Significant drops.
Costa Athanasiou (3:29)
Yeah. And even before the US markets opened, our own stock futures, for the S&P 500, the Dow, they were all pointing down.
SPEAKER_2 (3:37)
Not a good sign.
Costa Athanasiou (3:38)
No. And then the US dollar, it weakened against, well, most of the other major currencies. I mean, it just seemed like instant unease, like everyone was holding their breath.
SPEAKER_2 (3:46)
Yeah, a lot of uncertainty, definitely. Yeah. And what's really interesting is just how fast and widespread that reaction was, and it really highlights how interconnected the global economy has become.
