A tachyon is a hypothetical particle that speeds up as it loses energy, needs infinite energy just to slow down to the speed of light, and could in principle deliver a message to you before you send it.

Imagine a particle that actually speeds up, the more energy it loses. Like it requires an infinite amount of energy just to hit the brakes.

SPEAKER_2 (0:09)

Right, just to slow down to the speed of light.

SPEAKER_1 (0:11)

Exactly. And here is where it gets truly mind-bending.

If you could somehow capture one of these particles, control it, you could use it to send a text message to yourself yesterday.

SPEAKER_2 (0:23)

I know, I know, it sounds like pure science fiction, but that exact concept is, well, it's deeply imbedded in the mathematics of theoretical physics. Yeah. It represents the absolute boundary of where our current understanding of reality just completely breaks down.

SPEAKER_1 (0:37)

So welcome to this deep dive. Our mission today is to unpack the physics, the history, and the frankly bizarre paradoxes of the Tachyon.

SPEAKER_2 (0:45)

The ultimate rule breaker of the universe.

SPEAKER_1 (0:47)

Right. A hypothetical particle that permanently travels faster than the speed of light.

We are going to explore how it shatters the fundamental laws of cause and effect, you know, why some of the greatest scientific minds ever even proposed it, and how the impossible math behind it actually ended up shaping our modern understanding of how the universe gets its mass.

SPEAKER_2 (1:09)

Yeah, it's a wild ride. But to really grasp how something could even theoretically go faster than light, we first need to look at how physicists categorize the fundamental traffic lanes of the universe, right?

SPEAKER_1 (1:22)

Cosmic highway.

SPEAKER_2 (1:22)

Exactly. It helps to divide everything that moves into three distinct classes.

SPEAKER_1 (1:26)

Okay, so if we treat the universe like this giant cosmic highway, the first lane is exclusively for luxons, right? Correct. And these are like massless particles, like photons of light, and they have one strict rule. They always travel at exactly the speed of light.

SPEAKER_2 (1:40)

No speeding up, no slowing down in a vacuum, just a constant speed.

SPEAKER_1 (1:44)

Right. And then we have the lane that makes up everything we actually physically interact with.

SPEAKER_2 (1:49)

Which is pretty much everything you and I know. You, me, the device playing this audio, planets, galaxies.

SPEAKER_1 (1:56)

Right, all the heavy stuff.

SPEAKER_2 (1:57)

Exactly.

These are called bradions. They are ordinary matter with mass, and their fundamental rule is they always travel slower than the speed of light. Like no matter how much energy you pump into a bradion, it can never cross that universal speed limit.

SPEAKER_1 (2:12)

Which brings us to the third entirely theoretical class, right? The tachyons.

SPEAKER_2 (2:17)

The tachyons, yeah.

SPEAKER_1 (2:18)

Which comes from the Greek word takis, meaning swift. And these are particles that theoretically always travel faster than the speed of light.

SPEAKER_2 (2:27)

Right, which sounds impossible.

SPEAKER_1 (2:29)

Yeah, I mean, anyone who knows a bit of physics is probably thinking, wait, didn't Einstein prove that nothing can go faster than light?

SPEAKER_2 (2:35)

Well, yes and no. Physicists were actually theorizing about faster than light particles long before Einstein even published Special Relativity.

SPEAKER_1 (2:43)

Really? Before Relativity?

SPEAKER_2 (2:45)

Oh, yeah. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, prominent physicists like JJ. Thomson and Arnold Sommerfeld, they were already running the math on particles exceeding light speed.

SPEAKER_1 (2:56)

Wow, I had no idea.

SPEAKER_2 (2:57)

Yeah. And even after Einstein, like in 1923, Lev Yakovlevich Strum proposed that they might still exist. The mathematical framework was kind of just sitting there, waiting for someone to find a way around Einstein's speed limit.

SPEAKER_1 (3:11)

And the real breakthrough on that front didn't happen until, what, the 1960s?

SPEAKER_2 (3:14)

Exactly. In the 60s, scientists like EC. George Sudarshan and Alexiomirin Bilaniuk pointed out what looks like a glaring loophole in Special Relativity.

SPEAKER_1 (3:25)

Because Relativity says we cannot accelerate normal matter past the speed of light, right?

SPEAKER_2 (3:29)

Right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:29)

But it doesn't actually say things can't just start out going faster.

SPEAKER_2 (3:34)

Exactly. And the logic there is surprisingly sound. I mean, look at light itself.

SPEAKER_1 (3:38)

Photons.

SPEAKER_2 (3:39)

Yeah. Photons aren't accelerated from a standstill.

When a photon is created, it is born already traveling at the speed of light. Right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:47)

It doesn't have to warm up.

SPEAKER_2 (3:48)

Exactly. So Sudarshan and Bilaniuk basically applied that same logic to the other side of the boundary. Like, why couldn't a particle just be created already exceeding the speed of light?

SPEAKER_1 (3:59)

Okay, think of it this way. Think of the speed of light like a massive, infinitely tall, completely impenetrable brick wall.

SPEAKER_2 (4:06)

I like that analogy.

SPEAKER_1 (4:08)

Right. So, ordinary matter, the bradyons, we are on our side of the wall. We can drive our cars as fast as we want, but if we try to push through the wall, we just crash.
