Welcome to Stuff You Should Know from howstuffworks.com.

Josh Clark (0:29)

Hey, and welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh Clark. Yeah, that's right. There's Charles W. Chuck Bryant. Jerry's over there, and the ether, floating, possibly not existing, who knows?

And this is Stuff You Should Know.

Chuck Bryant (0:44)

That's right. Just a couple of merman trying to make their way in the world.

Josh Clark (0:50)

Yeah.

Chuck Bryant (0:50)

Trying to keep their tails wet.

Josh Clark (0:52)

Yeah.

Chuck Bryant (0:54)

You know?

Josh Clark (0:54)

Yeah.

Chuck Bryant (0:55)

Because if that thing dries out, you've seen Splash.

Josh Clark (0:58)

Yeah, it's toast.

Chuck Bryant (1:00)

No. She dried out, and she was just fine.

Josh Clark (1:03)

Oh, I thought, oh, you're thinking of ET, when he turned all white and dried out.

Chuck Bryant (1:07)

Now, I was thinking of Splash, because I couldn't remember, it was one of my favorite movies as a kid.

Josh Clark (1:13)

It was a cute movie.

Chuck Bryant (1:14)

It was one of those early HBO movies, early Tom Hanks, which I'm a big fan of early Tom Hanks. And I just thought it was a really fun, funny movie. John Candy.

Josh Clark (1:26)

Yeah, it was a great movie.

Chuck Bryant (1:28)

What's-his-name played the evil man trying to expose her. Eugene Levy, I think.

Josh Clark (1:35)

Oh, was he the bad guy?

Chuck Bryant (1:36)

Yeah, he was the one that...

Josh Clark (1:37)

You know that's a high quality movie when Eugene Levy's the bad guy.

Chuck Bryant (1:40)

Yeah, that was the SCTV crew. And he actually tried to spray her and get her wet, so she would...

Josh Clark (1:46)

Oh, was that, okay.

Chuck Bryant (1:47)

And in fact did turn into a mermaid on the sidewalk.

Josh Clark (1:49)

So that's what it was. She got wet, she turned into a mermaid.

Chuck Bryant (1:52)

Right.

Josh Clark (1:52)

She got dried, no problem.

Chuck Bryant (1:54)

Yes, and Darryl Hannah, of course, who's running around with Neil Young now.

Josh Clark (1:58)

Oh, really?

Chuck Bryant (1:59)

Yeah, how about that couple?

Josh Clark (2:01)

Sure.

Chuck Bryant (2:02)

Yeah, why not? They're both environmentalists.

Josh Clark (2:05)

But there's a lot of turquoise in that bedroom.

Chuck Bryant (2:07)

I wonder if you hook up with Neil Young, or anyone like that, if you're sort of a new relationship and not like the wife they had for 40 years, if you're like, eh, play a song, why don't you?

Josh Clark (2:20)

What?

Chuck Bryant (2:21)

Like, I wonder if you ask them to play music.

Josh Clark (2:24)

Oh, like you're actually into them?

Chuck Bryant (2:25)

Yeah, like if you're Billy Joel's new 25-year-old wife, do you ever say, like, hey honey, play me a tune?

Josh Clark (2:32)

Right. Play that one that you wrote 10 years before I was conceived.

Chuck Bryant (2:38)

I think what I'm saying is I would have a hard time being with Neil Young and not every night after dinner just kind of nudging the guitar toward him.

Josh Clark (2:47)

Oh, I gotcha.

Chuck Bryant (2:48)

And saying, I'd love to hear Old Man.

Josh Clark (2:51)

Yeah. Please, baby, one for me.

Chuck Bryant (2:53)

And yeah, he says I played that song 45,000 times.

Josh Clark (2:57)

Yeah, I would guess that, well, I can tell you, I would guess that once you reach a certain point in playing a song, you never want to hear that song or even think about it existing again. But then you still have to play it.

Chuck Bryant (3:12)

Oh, I try not to think about that when I'm at those shows.

Josh Clark (3:14)

Yeah, it makes me feel bad for them. Like, they might as well be in the monkey house or something, and you're just throwing bananas at them.

Chuck Bryant (3:22)

And God bless the people who really bring it still.

Josh Clark (3:26)

Sure.

Chuck Bryant (3:26)

Where you feel like, man, they're playing that song for me tonight.

Josh Clark (3:29)

Adamant.

Chuck Bryant (3:30)

Does he still bring it?

Josh Clark (3:33)

He's just who came to mind.

Chuck Bryant (3:35)

Whereas when I saw the police on their reunion, they were phoning it in.

Josh Clark (3:38)

Really? Yeah. Even Stuart Copeland?

Chuck Bryant (3:40)

Well, I mean, they were playing the songs, but it didn't look like they were enjoying themselves at all. It looked like a total money grab.
