Today, I'm reviewing Street Angel.

Street Angel, directed by Frank Borzage, is a 1928 drama that weaves a tale of love, adversity and redemption set against the backdrop of Naples. The film follows Angela, played by Janet Gaynor, a young woman driven to desperate measures to care for her dying mother. Her journey from street walking to joining a circus introduces her to Gino, a painter portrayed by Charles Farrell who becomes her love interest. The film explores themes of societal judgment and personal redemption, as Angela's past threatens to unravel her newfound happiness.

The film's visual style is heavily influenced by German expressionism, with Borzage employing shadows and light to create a sense of menace and emotional depth. This stylistic choice enhances the narrative, particularly in scenes where Angela is pursued by the law. The use of shadows not only underscores the film's dramatic tension, but also reflects the inner turmoil of its characters. Janet Gaynor's performance as Angela is a standout, capturing the character's vulnerability and resilience. Her portrayal earned her an Academy Award, shared for her roles in Seventh Heaven and Sunrise. Gaynor's ability to convey complex emotions without dialogue is a testament to her talent, making Angela's journey both compelling and relatable.

The film's narrative structure, however, presents some challenges. Angela's character undergoes significant transformations, often without sufficient on-screen development. These abrupt shifts can be jarring as the audience is left to fill in the gaps of her character's evolution. Despite this, Gaynor's performance remains consistent, grounding the film's emotional core. Street Angel also benefits from its supporting cast, including Charles Farrell as Gino. His portrayal of the passionate artist adds depth to the romantic subplot as Gino's love for Angela is tested by societal norms and personal prejudices. The film's exploration of love as a transformative force is both timeless and poignant, resonating with audiences even today.

The film's technical achievements are noteworthy, with Ernest Palmer's cinematography and Harry Oliver's art direction earning Oscar nominations. The visual storytelling, combined with a recorded score and sound effects, creates an immersive experience that enhances the film's emotional impact. While Street Angel may not have the narrative cohesion of Borzage's other works, it remains a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film. Its exploration of love, sacrifice and redemption is universal, transcending its early 20th century setting. The film's final act, set amidst the swirling mists of the docks, is a masterful piece of cinema, capturing the uncertainty and hope that define Angela and Gino's journey. In summary, Street Angel is a film that rises above its narrative shortcomings through its visual artistry and strong performances. It is a testament to the enduring power of love and the human spirit, making it a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate classic cinema. That's my take on Street Angel, and I'm giving it 3.5 stars out of a possible 5 stars. Thank you for listening.
