Elon Musk's SpaceX is telling investors it plans to launch a retail Starlink mobile service directly for the US consumer market. They're considering building their own terrestrial mobile network to go head to head with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

Which is wild because up until now, Starlink has kept their mobile offerings strictly to a partnership model.

They work alongside existing telecom companies.
Like T-Mobile is allowed to use Starlink satellites to fill in coverage gaps for their existing customers. It's a cooperative relationship. Starlink is basically just this helpful infrastructure layer hanging out in the background.

Yeah, but stepping out of that partnership model and selling direct mobile contracts? I mean, that means stepping into a saturated multi-billion dollar market. You're no longer the quiet utility.

We're actively trying to skill subscribers from your own partners.

And look, SpaceX has mastered the vacuum of space. They can land rockets on floating platforms in the middle of the ocean. But building a cell network means fighting a much more terrifying enemy, which is your local homeowners association.

Yeah, that's the central question here. Is a space company actually going to build physical cell towers across the country?
Or is there some other motive behind telling investors they want to compete with the very people they work with?

Right, because the requirements for becoming a mass market player in the cellular industry are entirely physical. The gap between running a satellite operation and building a functional ground level network is just, it's vast.

Oh, absolutely.

Based on Rob Chambers' analysis, building out this kind of architecture means securing tower capacity, installing small cells on street corners, building out ground stations and laying fiber backhaul.

Fiber backhaul is the part that always gets ignored. People think about wireless networks and assume they're just, you know, wireless.

Right, floating in the air.

Yeah, but they are highly wired. A cell tower is only wireless for the last mile or two to your phone.
The tower itself has to be physically connected to the Internet backbone.

Which means digging.

**SPEAKER_6** (3:31)
So much digging. Doing that requires burying fiber optic cables in the ground. You don't just drop a cable on the grass. You have to negotiate rights of way with every single municipality.
You have to hire crews for directional boring. You run the risk of hitting water mains or natural gas lines. It's an intensely physical dirty process that has to happen street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.

The deployment of small cells is just as difficult. Because you can't just build one giant tower in the center of a town anymore.

No, not at all.

**SPEAKER_5** (4:03)
To handle modern data needs, you need small antennas on light poles and utility poles scattered everywhere.
Every single one of those poles is owned by a city government or a local utility company. So you have to negotiate franchise agreements with thousands of different municipalities just to attach a piece of hardware the size of a backpack to a street lamp.

And you have the retail side of the equation. Selling direct to consumers requires a physical footprint. If Starlink wants to be a true alternative to Verizon or AT&T, they have to handle retail logistics.

Like actual stores? Right.

You drop your phone, the screen cracks, the SIM card fails. You want a physical location to walk into and talk to a human being.
