All right, so Spencer, I know last time you probably remember, the last time we did a Master of Maddox episode, I don't know if it was last time or not, maybe it was, I don't remember. My son had accidentally stolen my laptop.

Spencer Oliver (0:13)

Yeah.

Christopher Pfingsten (0:14)

Yeah, my laptop got broken.

He yeeted my laptop. So the problem is, for anyone that's not up to date, my child's backpack and my laptop bag are identical, and I put them next to each other in the car, so he took my laptop to elementary school. And apparently, when they put it in their cubbies, they yeet that from 100 yards off to see if they can get it right in the slot, because it broke all the USB ports on one side.

Spencer Oliver (0:41)

So yeah, there's a good news. It's going to be a quarterback with that kind of yard pass.

Christopher Pfingsten (0:45)

Yeah, no, he nailed it.

Rick (0:47)

Quarterback or outfielder.

Christopher Pfingsten (0:49)

Absolutely. Well, I'm pretty sure one of the other kids like they're like, oh, it's good, you know, like as it went in there. But speaking of children causing interruptions to daily function, we have Rick with us today.

Say hi, Rick.

Rick (1:04)

Hello.

Christopher Pfingsten (1:05)

Hey, so Rick submitted, he went to ems2020.com. He clicked the big red button to come on the show and do one of our Master Your Medic sponsored challenges. So Rick is here and Spencer is going to be giving him the scenario, at least I hope he is. If it was supposed to be me, then an episode canceled.

Anyways, so Rick is here. And I also just want to let you guys know that I have a hard off time that makes for a normal length episode for any other podcast. But for this one, it might be a short episode. So it could be Spencer at the end of the episode by himself with him.

Spencer Oliver (1:44)

Carrying the show, as usual.

Christopher Pfingsten (1:45)

But it sounds like Rick also has kind of the same issue running on when it comes to just having kids. And my God, does that change your life. But Rick, hey, welcome to the show. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Rick (1:57)

Glad to be here.

Yeah, so I am a paramedic out in central Texas. I've been in EMS since 2021 So right after the first few waves of COVID, but still kind of towards the end of it.

Christopher Pfingsten (2:11)

People still think that's what EMS 2020 is about.

Rick (2:14)

Yep, so still having to wear the mask on almost every single call. But then, yeah, did three years as an EMT, just finished my second year as a paramedic. So just about to start my third year right now. So right now, I'm kind of in a rural-ish EMS, but I'm enjoying it.

Christopher Pfingsten (2:37)

We were just in Austin not too long ago. It's a little bit south of Central, but we were just in Austin not too long ago for Fast 26 We got to host that, and we have Fast 27 is coming up, that Spencer and I are excited to be hosting as well.

So, all right, well, cool. I've been to Texas a few times. It's a wonderful state. It's a big state. I don't know if you know, but it's a big state. I know that's a mystery to most Texans.

Rick (3:03)

It's very big. Well, I'm originally from California, so I'm originally from the West Coast.

Christopher Pfingsten (3:08)

Gotcha, gotcha.

Rick (3:08)

And I've been in Texas for about 10 years now. And when we moved here, the fact that I drove for 13 hours and I was still in Texas drove me insane.

Spencer Oliver (3:19)

Yeah.

Rick (3:20)

Yeah. Yeah.

Christopher Pfingsten (3:21)

Well, the funny part about it, I always tell people, Texas is one of the few states where I will depart Texas and then land in Texas. That's where we're doing our travel and what not. And it's funny. So you mentioned the COVID, the COVID mask era, where we were masking up a lot. And I was fine with masking up, but that first day where they're like, hey, you don't have to mask up for every patient now. I didn't. And my very first patient, it was a choice and I immediately missed the mask because the very first patient I had where we no longer had as strict of a mask mandate, decided to just vomit all over the back of a Bell 429 and just cake it back there. And the smell was so nasty. And the problem is once you have a flight helmet on, you can't get access to your ears, so you can't put another mask on. So I'm just sitting there. I'm like, no, like, why? Like of all the things, oh God. But anyway, hey man, welcome to the show. And with that, we're going to play the intro.
