Brian, welcome to the show, Brian James. So good to have you on, man. It's been about a year and a half, two years since we first met. Yeah, Skyline Country Club here in Tucson.
You hung up.
Okay. Yo, Brian, what's up, man?
**Brian James** (1:28)
Hey, how you doing?
**Mike** (1:29)
Good, how are you?
**Brian James** (1:30)
I'm good. Just fresh back from the gym, little good little training session.
**Mike** (1:36)
Nice, dude. Did you do some Muay Thai this morning or just a workout?
**Brian James** (1:40)
Yeah, no, we did the Muay Thai this morning.
**Mike** (1:43)
Okay. Well, man, it's good to see you're smiling, Fanny. It's been about a year and a half since we first met at Skyline Country Club. And just appreciate what you're about, and the story of your life, man, gives me hope, gives me encouragement.
You know, I just kind of want to sit back today and hear what you've got to say. I know you've got some great life advice. And if you want to just kind of kick it off by letting the audience know, like, who you are, where you grew up, you know, what your life has looked like over the past, you know, 30-plus years. You're about my age. I'm 48 So how old are you?
**Brian James** (2:20)
I'm 49
**Mike** (2:21)
Okay.
**Brian James** (2:22)
Yeah, I'm 49 years old. 49 going on 27
**Mike** (2:27)
I feel that.
So yeah, man. So, you know, I know your story a bit, just a bit of it. You know, I follow you online. I love what you do. I love the message that you put out there for not just the youth, but for everybody, you know? And, you know, what does it like to, what does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a man in today's society? That's really the thought that's came to me over the last few days once we, you know, kind of linked up and decided that you would come on the show. Because, you know, you have, just so the audience kind of understands, are you incarcerated for 29 years in the state of California? Is that correct?
**Brian James** (3:05)
Yes.
**Mike** (3:06)
Okay. And, you know, I was locked up for a very, very minuscule amount of time compared to you. But what I do know is that prison environment is not a conduit of change.
It's not a positive environment, typically. It's an environment where, you know, negative things happen, bad things happen. There's gang banging, there's drugs. There's all the things on the street, and it's amplified, because you're locked in the little area.
And so I just, you know, for you to really just be super authentic today, to see the way you're creating change in your social media posts, just coming up to me at this event and just being so genuine with me and just being so cool. You know, I know you've dealt with a bunch of stuff. So what does it mean for you to be a man today? What does that mean for you?
**Brian James** (3:55)
That's a, I mean, that's a good question too, because next month will be four years that I'm coming up on that I've been free after that sentence. And I've, that's literally what I spend my entire day do, just like taking information, learning things, like trying to figure out like where my place in the world is.
So from my analysis, what I would say right now, being a man in the world, like for me is, I'm in a place right now where I would call myself, like really spiritually in tune right now. Like I've eliminated so many distractions. My life revolves around like training and work and my home life. So like my goal is for me to be a man, and my answer question is just to spiritually, mentally, and physically as strong as I can be. That way, I'm able to take on any circumstance or responsibilities that fall on my lap. Things happen so quick in this world, and they can send you into emotional upheavals. They can, you know, it's just so many different things. So I just want to just be like the strongest person I can be so that I can be of service to the world and be useful to the world, which is a big part of my goal. Responsibility and, you know, commitment and all those things come with it. But the short answer would just to be as strong as I possibly can in all those those three areas that I believe make up a man. And if one of those areas are lacking, then I think you're off balance, at least for me.
