Hi, friends, I am Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund. And today, I have with me Sridhar Ramaswamy, who is the CEO of Snowflake. Snowflake is a data platform on which many big companies of the world run their business. That's why when your bank approves a loan, or a hospital patient brings the data together, then Snowflake is often working behind it. Sridhar spent 15 years in Google, where he increased the advertising business by $1.5 billion and reached $100 billion. Then he left Google to start his own company, and only after two years he became the CEO of Snowflake. Now here in NBIIM, we are also the investors of Snowflake, and we use its products on a large scale. Along with this, we have about 2 petabytes of data on Snowflake, which is equivalent to 20 lakh gigabytes of data. And we do about 30 lakh queries in the database every day. First of all, how will you explain to a person about Snowflake who hasn't heard about it? In short.

**Sridhar Ramaswamy** (1:02)
Yes, so we are a data platform. We are like a cloud computing platform, like AWS, but our special focus is on data. We bring you data from different systems, analyze it, get insights from it, and then take you to those systems where you take action. That is, we are an analytic data platform.

Who are your clients?

**Sridhar Ramaswamy** (1:25)
Oh, so if you see, we have about half of the addressable companies of Global 2000, i.e. companies outside China. In this, we have financial services, health care, advertising, and in many other industries, we have hundreds of customers. So we can say that this list is quite long. And we operate in more than 25 countries, whereas our customers are in more countries than this.

When the company started in 2012, the idea to separate the storage from the computer was quite radical. Tell us a little bit about this. Absolutely.

**Sridhar Ramaswamy** (2:00)
The easiest way to understand this very important concept is that you think that how we have always bought or used computers.
I always tell people that in the past 50 years, whenever a company needed computing, we used to buy one box. That box had a fixed amount of storage, compute and memory, which was fixed from the beginning. And usually, you had to work with that box for about 5 years. So, if you needed more memory later, nothing could be done. Just wait and if you needed more compute or CPU power, then nothing could be done. Because you had already bought a machine. This is the real thing. Well, your phone is also a box. It's just a small box. And it was quite difficult to take data from one box to another box. For that, you had to do a separate integration project.
So, here, Snowflake used cloud computing to change this whole idea. You can understand cloud as an infinite storage and a great computing power system, which can be shared by many customers. We separated compute and storage from each other. We said that you can take as much storage as you want and as much computing power as you want. If you want to do a deep analytic job, because a person in NBIIM got such a great idea for investment, for which you had to go through every part of historical information, then you can start 1000 computers in a weekend, can do analysis, can shut them down, and then you can find out how to apply it in practice. This is the magic of Snowflake model.

Most software companies charge per seat, but you charge as much as people use. Why is this method better?

**Sridhar Ramaswamy** (3:39)
Because it keeps the pricing aligned with the value creation. One of the benefits of this is that we are good at estimating the demand, because we have more than 13,000 customers. That's why we can handle the demand and give you a more stable and better model. This is beneficial because you don't have to make a commitment about how much storage you are going to use or how many CPUs you are going to use. And this means that you spin up the resources only when they are needed. Most of the demand in analytic jobs is not the same. As you know, there is a big difference between day and night in transactional workloads. People don't make the same amount of banking transactions at night. That's why there are many patterns that are better understood than before. Due to the consumption model, we can give you a very high pricing. Because we can manage and amortize this entire load on a large scale. This allows our company to be fully aligned with value creation. You make the payment first, but we recognize the revenue only when you and your team use Snowflake.
