Molly Bloom (1:04)

I'm joined today by Lulu from Minneapolis. Hi Lulu.

Lulu (1:08)

Hi Joy.

Molly Bloom (1:10)

This is a follow up to the Forever Ago episode that came out recently about the origins of pizza. Today we're looking at one of the foods that you might put on a pizza.

Lulu (1:20)

We're talking toppings.

Molly Bloom (1:23)

Specifically, we're talking about the history of one of the most controversial toppings of all time.

Lulu (1:30)

It's yellow. It's sweet. It makes people on the Internet get really mad.

It's pineapple.

Molly Bloom (1:44)

Okay. Cool your jets people on the Internet. It's just a pizza topping.

Personally, I love it. I love the sweet and salty combination. I like the bright yellow because yellow is one of my favorite colors out of seven. What about you Lulu? Do you like pineapple?

Lulu (2:00)

I've never tried pineapple.

Molly Bloom (2:02)

Would you be open to it?

Lulu (2:04)

I guess I'd try it.

Molly Bloom (2:06)

Have you tried any weird toppings before?

Lulu (2:08)

Not really. I've had olives, which is not really weird.

Molly Bloom (2:12)

No. Green olives or black?

Lulu (2:14)

Both.

Molly Bloom (2:16)

Have you ever had macaroni and cheese pizza?

Lulu (2:19)

I have not.

Molly Bloom (2:20)

They have that. It's really popular here. I've tried a macaroni and cheese pizza and a potato pizza, which is like mashed potatoes, but with a garlic sauce instead of a red sauce. It's really good. Would you try that ever?

Lulu (2:35)

I guess I would.

Molly Bloom (2:37)

There's all kinds of stuff. Are there any toppings that you can't stand, that you're absolutely not on this pizza?

Lulu (2:43)

I'm a vegetarian, so I wouldn't eat pepperoni. I eat salmon. That's the only thing I'll make an exception for.

Molly Bloom (2:50)

Oh, yeah, yeah. I wonder if salmon and pineapple would be good.

Lulu (2:53)

Maybe.

Molly Bloom (2:54)

As most people know, I'm not a mayonnaise person, so any pizza with mayonnaise on it is just going to go out the window. If you can make up your own pizza, what would you put on it?

Lulu (3:04)

Dang, I don't know. I'd probably put like, I know there's already like a pickled pizza, but...

Molly Bloom (3:09)

Ooh.

Lulu (3:10)

Maybe I'd put like pickles and olives, like and kimchi.

Molly Bloom (3:13)

Ooh, that's a good idea. Kimchi on a pizza. It's like pickled cabbage, right?

Lulu (3:18)

Except it's really spicy.

Molly Bloom (3:19)

Ooh. Do you like spicy foods?

Lulu (3:21)

Yeah.

Molly Bloom (3:22)

Oh, that's good. I can't handle it. My mouth starts to cry.

We asked Smarty Pals what you all think too.

Lulu (3:34)

Here's what you said.

SPEAKER_1 (3:37)

Pineapple on pizza is my favorite type of pizza because it tastes really good and it's so different from all the other types of pizza.

SPEAKER_7 (3:48)

Hawaiian pizza should be illegal because it has pineapple. I think cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza are the best.

Lulu (3:57)

Well, I personally love pineapple pizza.

SPEAKER_7 (3:59)

I can't eat pineapple because the enzymes hurt my tummy.

SPEAKER_5 (4:04)

I like Hawaiian pizza because the pineapple adds more flavor.

SPEAKER_8 (4:09)

I think that pineapple should not be on pizza because if you order pizza, then the pineapple is all dried up and crunchy when it arrives.

SPEAKER_5 (4:19)

My opinion on pineapple on pizza is that I love it.

SPEAKER_7 (4:23)

I think pineapple on pizza is good.

Lulu (4:26)

I think pineapple on pizza tastes really good.

SPEAKER_5 (4:29)

I love Hawaiian pizza, but some of my friends don't agree.

SPEAKER_7 (4:32)

No, I don't like pineapple on pizza because I don't like pineapple and the enzymes hurt my tummy.

SPEAKER_5 (4:38)

My mom comes from a place where there's a lot of pineapple, and I just sort of grew up eating it a lot, especially on pizza with ham.
