Sins of the (Grand)father
Data Over Dogma
June 15, 2026
The sins of the fathers! It's a phrase you've heard a thousand times, but did you know it comes straight from the Bible? This week it's Bible versus Bible, and the topic is generational punishment: God visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children to the third and fourth generation.

So you're saying with Hilton Honors, I can use points for a free night stay anywhere?
SPEAKER_2 (0:32)
Anywhere.
SPEAKER_3 (0:33)
What about fancy places like the Canopy in Paris? Yeah, Hilton Honors, baby. Or relaxing sanctuaries like the Conrad and Tulum?
SPEAKER_4 (0:41)
Hilton Honors, baby.
SPEAKER_3 (0:43)
What about the five-star Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives? Are you going to do this for all 9,000 properties? When you want points that can take you anywhere, anytime, it matters where you stay.
SPEAKER_5 (0:54)
Hilton, for this day.
Dan McClellan (0:57)
Their babies didn't do anything wrong. Their babies were not like, I'm making a conscious decision to follow in the sins of my father. Hey, everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (1:14)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (1:15)
And this is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation. About the same. How are things today, Dan?
Dan Beecher (1:26)
Things are good. We are, you're, we're gonna try and burn through this one so that you can get out of here. You're trying to, you're trying to leave.
Dan McClellan (1:35)
Yeah, I'm trying to get out of Dodge, get out of town, get out of the country.
Dan Beecher (1:40)
Yeah.
Dan McClellan (1:40)
Get to another country, and then argue with some other scholars about Christology.
Dan Beecher (1:46)
Ooh.
Dan McClellan (1:46)
I'm very excited about it.
Dan Beecher (1:48)
That sounds exciting. We'll see if they let you back in. That'll be good.
Dan McClellan (1:53)
If I'm, I'm probably on some watch lists, but not by anybody with an awful lot of power, so I'm not too worried about it.
Dan Beecher (1:58)
That's true. So today's show, we got a couple things coming up. We got, we're gonna start out with a Bible versus Bible.
Dan McClellan (2:08)
Yeah.
Dan Beecher (2:08)
And that's gonna be a lot of fun. We're gonna, we're gonna see if us talking will be enough to get a generational curse placed on either of us.
You're the only one that that's really dangerous for. I have no progeny. So we'll, we'll just see from there.
Dan McClellan (2:25)
Yeah.
Dan Beecher (2:26)
And, and then we're gonna do an Is It Canon and talk about a book that is still canon for plenty and is not canon for others. I had never heard of it, which that makes, I mean, no one's shocked by my experience, so that's fine.
Dan McClellan (2:47)
But this, this was, when it comes to the apocrypha of all the texts that could have ended up in the canon, this is probably one of the apocryphal texts. I think it was one of two apocryphal texts that came the closest to being included in the Jewish canon.
Dan Beecher (3:03)
So just so that we don't bury the lead, we're going to be talking about Sirach or the book of Ben Sira or I don't know.
Dan McClellan (3:10)
Ecclesiasticus is the other one, the churchy book.
Dan Beecher (3:15)
Or the wisdom of Jesus, son of Eleazar. But that's okay. It's got a lot of names.
Dan McClellan (3:20)
Yes, yes.
Dan Beecher (3:21)
So we're going to get to all of that in the second part of the show. But for now, it's Bible versus Bible, baby. Okay, so we are not going to talk about any of the movies or TV series called The Sins of the Father.
Dan McClellan (3:42)
We actually were like, let's look this up. And there were books, there's a video game.
Dan Beecher (3:49)
Songs, there are songs called Sins of the Father.
Dan McClellan (3:53)
James Coburn was in one of these pieces of media. So you know it's good.
Dan Beecher (3:58)
You know, it's been ruffling some feathers.
Dan McClellan (4:02)
Yep, and Dan was like, wasn't Daniel Day-Lewis in one of these, too? And then we found out that was in the name of the father. And that led to an entirely different neurodivergent rabbit hole. So I'm still-
SPEAKER_7 (4:16)
We're back though, we're back.
Dan McClellan (4:18)
Yes, yes.
Dan Beecher (4:19)
We're here for you.
Dan McClellan (4:20)
I'm gonna claim that identity, even though formally I have been diagnosed right out of that identity. You're pretty sure.
