Hey, everyone, Gil Gross here, and it is time for another Mailbag where I answer your questions, hot takes, observations, ultimately your comments about tennis or anything else. Post Wimbledon, 2026, elite comment section. Thank you for all who participated. I pulled 25 comments, which is way more than I usually pull. I'll try to be efficient as I get through them. I don't know if I'm going to get to all of them.
I know I kept you waiting a little bit longer than usual for this. Honestly, I'm trying to spread out the content a little bit because I knew that I couldn't really do a traditional Monday Match Analysis for this current week. So I decided to push back the Wimbledon mailbag a little bit. Reason why I'm going to be busy this week is because I'm heading to a Detroit suburb called Bloomfield Hills for a newly upgraded Challenger 125 event that I'm doing commentary on. I'm putting the draw up here on YouTube. Very excited. Very excited to get over there and get some eyes on some of my favorites. Alex Mickelson is the top seed. Spencer Johnson is making a lot of noise as he has a absolute bomb of a serve and had a big Challenger result last week in Lincoln, Nebraska. And Tanasi Kokonakis will also be in Bloomfield Hills. So looking forward to that and looking forward to getting into this mailbag.
First question is from Albert. Hi, Gill, could you rank Sinner's slams in terms of impressiveness like you did with Alcaraz after the AO this year? Sure. Always fun to take stock of these historic major title runs. So we've got five to rank with Sinner. And I think the top spot, pretty clear to me, that would be Wimbledon of last year, Wimbledon of 2025 The final against Alcaraz to date is Sinner's most important performance of his career. Was also impressive in its nature, but definitely the most important. Sinner had lost four matches in a row to Carlos. There was this pretty pervasive thought that the natural surfaces both swung heavily in favor of Alcaraz. And there was concern that the RG match, the final about a month prior, was going to have a lingering long-tail effect on Sinner. Alcaraz had won back-to-back Wimbledon titles. And ultimately Sinner needed to figure out something in this head-to-head. He needed to increase his risk appetite in the matchup, which he did in Paris, but he got his heart ripped out. And I guess what was most impressive about this is that didn't affect his execution in this final, where he made some massive risky second serves under pressure. He got forward twice as often as Alcaraz in this final. I wrote it down in my notes here. He was up 40 times at the net. Alcaraz was up 23 times. He definitely got lucky earlier in the run with Dimitriov getting hurt. Although I really don't like assuming that Grigor was going to win that match, as if that's a certainty. I'm anti that, but he was up two sets to love, and he got hurt. So Sinner caught a big break there. Other than that, he beat everyone else in straights, including Djokovic in a dominant semi-final performance. So that's my number one. My number two would be the Australian Open in 2024, Sinner's first ever major. I think the first slam gets a lot of bonus points, and I talked about this in the Alcaraz Power Ranking. It's just so darn important that you get one under your belt, so you can sort of know that you can do it, and nobody, I think the most, one of the most uncomfortable feelings for a tennis pro is when that process of getting your first drags out a little bit longer than people think it should.
