Should New Yorkers Root For Syracuse Or St. John's?

The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

August 10, 2026

Craig wonders if he's indebted to his alma mater of Syracuse -- or if attendance at a St. John's game to see Rick Pitino would grant him the ability to ride the bandwagon. Also, the guys wind up talking about bunting somehow.
Speakers: Craig Carton, Chris McMonigle

I think St. John's is going to start to get to a point where we really start paying attention after...

**Chris McMonigle** (0:04)
Probably not, but here's the... We're in a weird scenario this year. So, I'm in a bit of a pickle.
Because as a New Yorker, I always like St. John's.

**Craig Carton** (0:16)
Love to help you out.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:17)
I have never been an anti-St. John's. I've ever read it again, St. John's. As a kid, I was born in New York City, lived in the Bronx, grew up in New Rochelle.

**Craig Carton** (0:24)
You grew up in the Big East Tournament when you were in Syracuse?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:26)
No, no. Then I go to Syracuse.

**SPEAKER_3** (0:27)
Obviously, my allegiances are Syracuse, right?

**Chris McMonigle** (0:30)
But I was never, I never hated St. John's.

**Craig Carton** (0:33)
Right.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:33)
Because who didn't love my era? Chris Mullen, right? And Luke Karnasekha.
Syracuse plays St. John's at the Garden this year. Okay? It's going to be a sellout, obviously. You will have a mixed crowd there, for sure.
If you have 18,000 people, then it might be 11-7, St. John's to Syracuse fans. St. John's has graciously offered me an opportunity to sit on the wood for that game, on their side. Yeah. Again.

**Craig Carton** (1:05)
Come on. You don't like the coach. You don't like the program anymore. You're a St. John's guy.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:10)
Well, we have a new coach.

**Craig Carton** (1:11)
Okay, I know.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:12)
I'm very down on the program. That is true. I hate. Don't like Jim Baheim at all. He's well aware of that. Was not a fan of Adrian Autry getting the gig. Obviously, new blood in town. Yes.
You know.

**Craig Carton** (1:27)
I don't.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:28)
Can't sit on the St. John's side.

**Craig Carton** (1:30)
You certainly can.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:31)
Have you tell me they're playing Villanova? I'm right there with the Redmen. Good to go.

**Craig Carton** (1:36)
Come on.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:37)
Oh, a storm, whatever.

**Craig Carton** (1:38)
You that biggest Syracuse guy? Come on.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:41)
I'm not.

**Craig Carton** (1:42)
So that's not what we're talking about.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:43)
I'm not.

**Craig Carton** (1:44)
You went to school there. It served its purpose. Now you've moved on. You've grown.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:47)
Can I sit next to Pitino and not root for Pitino? Yeah.

**Craig Carton** (1:52)
Well, again, no, you're rooting for St. John's.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:54)
See, that's the problem.

**Craig Carton** (1:55)
You're going to root for St. John's. I'm not.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:57)
I'm not. I'm not going to root against St. John's.

**Craig Carton** (1:59)
There's enough Syracuse guys out there already. All right. There's enough. We don't need anymore.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:04)
Now, I guess, like anything else, if and when John Minko retires and they're looking for a new play-by-play voice.

**Craig Carton** (2:11)
Would you be willing to do that?

**Chris McMonigle** (2:13)
I'd probably do that.
But then I'd have to root for them. That puts me in a spot. Well, not really. That puts me in a weird spot too. To the line, to the lane. Got it.

**Craig Carton** (2:23)
You'd have to run out of here earlier than you even do now.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:26)
I would do.

**Craig Carton** (2:26)
I'm doing this.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:28)
You can't do those two jobs. Oh, okay.

**Craig Carton** (2:29)
That's what I'm saying.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:30)
There's too much travel involved and it wouldn't be fair to them. So when you retire? Nor are they asking.

**Craig Carton** (2:34)
Could you see yourself doing that? If you're done with this in 10 years, as you keep the other represent. Retired from here. Could you do a play-by-play gig of something?

**Chris McMonigle** (2:43)
Not baseball, it's too much. Like once I retire, I want to be retired.
But if you said, hey, you're 65, you're retired, but you got 30 games a year you gotta do. Right. Yes, I could do that. I could see that.

**Craig Carton** (2:57)
You could see that?

**Chris McMonigle** (2:58)
Yeah.

**Craig Carton** (2:59)
Getting into your play-by-play side at the tail end.

**Chris McMonigle** (3:02)
I wouldn't do baseball, I don't think, because all the travel.

**Craig Carton** (3:05)
No, I got you.

**Chris McMonigle** (3:06)
And that's not like when you're 65, you wanna do less, not more.

**Craig Carton** (3:08)
Like say the Yankees said, you could be our AA affiliate, and you do all the home games. No, no thank you. Why not?
Come to the Hudson Valley, Somerset, New Jersey, you're close. No. Somerset, New Jersey, 80 games here, just the home games.
