Welcome to The Bossticks.
Starring Lauryn Bosstick and Michael Bosstick. Together, they are The Bossticks.
**Lauryn Bosstick** (0:15)
So why did you guys decide to start a podcast as a couple? Cause that's what crazy people do.
**Shawn Johnson East** (0:19)
It's what crazy people do. We spend every second together. Well, well, do you want the actual story?
**Lauryn Bosstick** (0:25)
Yes, give us the actual story.
**Shawn Johnson East** (0:27)
I got pregnant with our first child, our daughter, Drew. And seven days, was it seven days? That's about right. Yeah, seven days after I gave birth, he started the podcast, he launched it.
**Michael Bosstick** (0:38)
Just by yourself?
**Shawn Johnson East** (0:39)
We never talked about doing it. He launched, no, no, with no episode.
**Lauryn Bosstick** (0:43)
What do you mean? You just launched it by yourself?
**Shawn Johnson East** (0:45)
He came up with the name, he came up with the concept, and he launched it. And he said, he sent it out on Apple Podcasts. He's like, we're starting a podcast. I didn't really know that. This is a great marriage. This probably sent us into therapy.
**Andrew East** (0:57)
Mistakes were made, mistakes were made.
**Shawn Johnson East** (0:58)
It charted, so then we had no choice but to do the thing. I was so pissed. I was so mad.
**Michael Bosstick** (1:06)
But weren't you excited that it charted that way? People were excited for you guys to do a show.
**Shawn Johnson East** (1:09)
Yeah, but I was most part of it with my first kid.
**Lauryn Bosstick** (1:11)
Michael, she was seven days postpartum.
**Shawn Johnson East** (1:16)
I was, Michael.
**Michael Bosstick** (1:18)
Mistakes were made.
**Shawn Johnson East** (1:19)
It was crazy. But I will say it's our favorite thing that we do now because we get to have actual real conversations with people, which is really cool, and we talk about relationships.
**Michael Bosstick** (1:28)
Well, we were talking before we started about some of the mutual friends we have, and I'm sure if we start to go down the list, the reason that we started doing this and why we like it so much is because we get to meet so many incredible people. I mean, we wouldn't be sitting here with you guys without the show.
And it's been like a real, everyone tries to go to these networking events and do these things. That's so uncomfortable for me to stand around with the cocktail and be like, God, hopefully someone talks to me. But this, you get to basically go to anyone with any problems. Hey, do you want to come talk about whatever you're doing for an hour or two hours?
**Shawn Johnson East** (1:59)
Yeah.
**Lauryn Bosstick** (1:59)
Tell them about the text that you got sent today about what your friend said about them.
**Shawn Johnson East** (2:04)
Oh, no.
**Michael Bosstick** (2:05)
Well, he said a lot. I don't want to blow Carter. Carter is going to listen to this. I don't want to blow him up too much.
**Lauryn Bosstick** (2:09)
It's very nice. Very nice.
**Michael Bosstick** (2:12)
I'm going to paraphrase it for you guys. And like I said, before we started the show, it's like we have so much on you guys because you guys have such extensive careers. Most people come in and they're a one trick pony. It's easy. I just stick with them and say, okay, what did you do? You guys have done so much. But basically, what we were talking about is one, it's crazy that you guys have had the careers you've had in professional sports and just being athletes. But then you've also been able to transition that and build real businesses. You've become real investors. You've built a family together. You've stayed in a successful marriage. That's not common.
There's not a lot of people that have done all of those things and checked all those boxes and have done gracefully and successfully over long periods of time. What do you think the secret is to that?
**Andrew East** (2:56)
I don't know if there were ever boxes before. But when we were younger, I don't think we aspired to do a podcast or be investors. It was, I think, if we've done anything well, it's being present with what's in front of us and trying to focus on that and do that really well.
Then as you guys know, as well as anybody, your podcast grows and then there's other opportunities that maybe they're distractions or maybe they're natural growth paths. I think we've just stepped into things that have come our way and have made sense. It's been a fun ride so far.
