Sean Hayes (0:04)

What are you eating, what are you eating, Jay? What are you chewing on for the cold open?

Jason Bateman (0:07)

Yeah, I'm, I'm...

Will Arnett (0:08)

You're back on your bars?

Sean Hayes (0:10)

Yeah, I'm on my bars.

Will Arnett (0:11)

Don't mention the brand, because you know what? It's not worth getting, you know, $12 of free bars.

Jason Bateman (0:17)

You know what I mean? That's true. Instead, I will just give a nice Hawaiian welcome to our audience and say hello.

Will Arnett (0:22)

Oh my God.

Sharon Horgan (0:23)

Welcome to SmartLess.

Will Arnett (0:43)

Do we get a workout in already, JB?

Jason Bateman (0:45)

We got some cardio, we got some sauna, we got some pool, we got a shower.

Sean Hayes (0:50)

What, have you gone to bed? I mean, that's a lot to accomplish.

Jason Bateman (0:53)

Guys, I'm still up.

Sean Hayes (0:54)

Oh, no.

Will Arnett (0:55)

I'm still up.

Sean Hayes (0:57)

Willie, I told Jason, I saw Jason on Sunday, we missed you, sorry.

Will Arnett (1:01)

Oh, you guys got together?

Jason Bateman (1:03)

Yeah, what was your excuse?

Will Arnett (1:04)

Not in town? Is that still valid?

Sean Hayes (1:06)

You can phone in, but you're in town now.

Will Arnett (1:09)

I am, I'm back.

Sean Hayes (1:10)

We're gonna see you later today.

Jason Bateman (1:12)

But don't fall for it, Sean. You're back out again in a few days?

Will Arnett (1:15)

No, a couple weeks. But let me just say this, we are going, we are gonna see each other tonight, this afternoon and tonight, under circumstances that are not the best, but we're going to celebrate the life of somebody that we all worked with and we all love deeply.

Jason Bateman (1:29)

The great.

Will Arnett (1:30)

The great Jim Burroughs, who we had on the podcast and who sadly passed away a little while ago.

Jason Bateman (1:37)

Close, close friend of ours, a close friend tour of ours, father figure of ours.

Will Arnett (1:42)

One of the all time great, not just, you know, obviously he revolutionized multi-camera like television directing for comedy, et cetera, but he also was just such an excellent guy.

Sean Hayes (1:54)

Yeah, the best.

Will Arnett (1:54)

And so kind and generous and just funny, man.

Jason Bateman (1:57)

So it was instrumental in giving me really important roles in my life as an actor. And also in mentoring me as a director and helping me find representation as a director.

Sean Hayes (2:11)

And to remind people, my sister Tracy, he directed every episode of Well and Grace and Cheers. And he directed like the first year of Friends and Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory and Mary Tyler Moore and everything you've ever loved.

Will Arnett (2:23)

And he co-created Cheers on top of that with the Charles brothers. It reminds me, I think I told him when he was on JP. I don't know if you remember this, but one time we ran into Jimmy in Midtown in New York, and we talked to him for a second. Then he said, all right, I'll see you guys later. And I go, all right, cheers.

And then I sort of like watched him leave, and I looked towards you, and you were just staring at me with that, like hey, dummy, did you just say cheers to Jimmy Burroughs?

Jason Bateman (2:52)

Fucking Canadians, god damn it.

Sean Hayes (2:55)

So I told J this story, but I'll try to tell a shorter version. So speaking of Jimmy, his wife, Debbie Burroughs, who we love, she invited Scotty and I for her first outing since her husband passed away to the Hollywood Bowl. And so we go and sit outside on our front stoop and wait for the Hollywood Bowl. And J, please move me along if this is taking too long. Oh my god, this story. This guy, this is last week, this guy was sitting, this guy got out of his car across the street.

Jason Bateman (3:25)

I think Will, your guest just clapped or snapped.

Will Arnett (3:28)

I know, she's like, I'm still here.

Jason Bateman (3:30)

Mike's still hot, still ready and willing to come on the podcast.

Sean Hayes (3:33)

Anyway, well I can tell you later. But it's this crazy story, but this guy got out of his car, came over and started berating me and Scotty out of nowhere and put his phone up. He started videotaping us and we were just sitting there.

Will Arnett (3:44)

Where were you sitting? In front of your house?

Sean Hayes (3:45)

In front of our house, yeah.
