Hello, everyone, and welcome to The Next Best Picture Podcast, where today we are reviewing Sense And Sensibility, and the story is as follows. Three sisters experienced love and heartbreak after they were forced to leave their family estate with their widowed mother and move to a humble cottage. The film is starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, and Fiona Shaw. It is directed by Georgia Oakley, and it is written by Diana Reid, and here to join me today for this spoiler-filled podcast review of the new version of Sense And Sensibility, I have Nadia Dalimonte.

So we recently reviewed the 1995 Sense And Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee, a movie that is really beloved. Still, after the rewatch, I think holds up really well to this day. This is definitely a different version, though. Georgia Oakley is a filmmaker who I think we were all very impressed by with her debut feature film Blue Gene a couple of years ago. And that streak is continuing here with her second film, which I think is definitely presenting the story that we are all familiar with, with a different tone and vibe, and one that I think is more fitting to what people expect from period costume dramas today.
I also think that when you populate it with age-appropriate stars, that also helps considerably in these relationships and the relatability to these iconic characters that people have really loved dating back to the publication of Jane Austen's 1811 novel. And they are brought to life here in a way that feels both contemporary while still honoring Jane Austen's classic story.
That feels like it just summarized my opening thoughts. So what do you all think of it? I would love to hear first from Sense And Sensibility number one fan herself, Nadia Dalimonte. Nadia, I'm sure you had high expectations heading into this. Maybe a bit of skepticism too, considering the love for the material. Did this lift up to the hype?
Nadia Dalimonte (4:44)
So yeah, I had a bit of both.
I did right off the bat, I thought this was absolutely lovely.
I will admit when I heard the news that there was going to be a new adaptation of Sense And Sensibility, I was curious and optimistic, but I was also a little bit indifferent only because I was just perfectly content with the 95 version and it's one of my favorite films of all time.
