Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Deep Dive. There are three words from an SEC commissioner this week that, on the face of it, sound incredibly boring. Tokenization is coming. That's Hester Peirce, speaking at the CIFMA Digital Assets Conference in New York yesterday. Her fuller point was that tokenization is coming, and she would rather it happen in America than watch overseas markets build tokenized versions of American equities without a domestic alternative.

These were Peirce's own views as a commissioner rather than an official prediction from the SEC. But the timing matters, because only days earlier the SEC had actually changed the rules. It introduced a temporary five-year framework allowing certain real US-listed stocks to trade in tokenized form through automated market makers and liquidity pools on public, permissionless distributed ledgers. These aren't supposed to be pretend Nvidia or synthetic Apple tokens either. Under the exemption, the tokenized security has to preserve the rights and privileges associated with the underlying share. And I completely understand if your first reaction to all of that is, who cares? Because tokenization might be the worst marketed potentially enormous change in finance I've ever seen. Say Bitcoin and people immediately think about a price. Say XRP and half of X starts arguing. Say Solana and somebody will inevitably mention meme coins. But start talking about tokenized deposits, distributed ledgers, settlement infrastructure, and automated liquidity pools. And it sounds like something you would be forced to sit through at an 8 o'clock banking conference before the coffee arrives. But stay with me, because by the end of this episode, you'll understand why Standard Chartered has connected this apparently boring change in financial plumbing to a $200 Chainlink prediction, a $100 Uniswap prediction, $3,500 Aave, $60 Morpho, and $40,000 Ethereum. They've also got Solana at $2,000 by the end of the decade, although that particular forecast has other drivers as well.

And only last week, the bank put a $10 target on Arbitrum, while explicitly pointing towards the growth of tokenized assets and traditional financial institutions moving on chain. These are not our targets, and none of them are guaranteed. Some of them require absolutely enormous growth to materialize. But what interests me is why a major global bank thinks these things are connected in the first place. Before we get into it, if you are looking for somewhere to buy crypto, Kraken is the platform we use and trust ourselves. Using our link in the description supports the podcast and helps us keep doing these episodes without stuffing them full of traditional adverts. If you're a new customer, use our link, complete your first qualifying trade and message us, and we'll send you 20 XRP. This is not financial advice and obviously do your own research. And if you already have Kraken and therefore can't use the link, you can still help massively by dropping the show a 5-star rating on Spotify. It takes seconds, and it genuinely helps more people find us. So what actually is tokenization? Forget the jargon. Imagine you own a share of Apple. Today, ownership of that share moves through brokers, exchanges, custodians, clearing systems and various databases. Tokenization basically says, What if the representation of that ownership existed as a digital token on a blockchain? You haven't turned Apple into a cryptocurrency. Apple is still Apple. Its factories, cash, earnings and shareholders haven't changed. What you've changed is the infrastructure recording and moving ownership. You could do the same thing with a government bond, a money market fund, a property, private credit, gold, a mortgage, a bank deposit, potentially almost any financial asset. And once that asset exists on chain, things become interesting. It can potentially settle much faster. Markets can potentially operate for longer than the traditional trading day.

Smart contracts can automate parts of transactions.

Assets from different systems can potentially interact. And, crucially for this episode, a tokenized treasury bond could eventually become something you don't simply own. You could potentially move it into an on-chain lending market, use it as collateral, borrow against it, trade it against another tokenized asset, and have software manage parts of that process automatically. That is where the boring database change starts becoming a crypto story. And look at what has happened in literally the last few days. The SEC's Innovation Exemption now provides a limited route for tokenized US stocks to trade through permissioned automated market makers, with the underlying smart contracts required to be public, auditable, and deployed on a public permissionless distributed ledger.

Again, this does not mean the entire NASDAQ is moving on to Ethereum tomorrow. There are volume restrictions, symbol limits, investor protections, and the exemption expires after five years unless the regulatory framework develops further.

But it is a genuine regulatory pathway that wasn't there before. Then look at Europe. On Monday, the euro system launched Pontes, allowing wholesale transactions in tokenized assets to settle using central bank money.
