Today's movie review is for Scary Movie 4

Scary Movie 4, directed by David Zucker, is the fourth installment in the comedy franchise that has made a name for itself by parodying popular horror and science fiction films.

Released in 2006, this film attempts to weave together a plot involving Cindy Campbell, played by Anna Faris, who finds herself in a cursed house, and Tom Ryan, played by Craig Bierko, a crane operator trying to protect his children from an alien invasion. The film's runtime is a brisk 83 minutes and it carries a PG-13 rating, making it accessible to a wide audience. The movie's primary targets for parody include War of the Worlds, The Grudge, Saw, Million Dollar Baby, The Village, and Brokeback Mountain. However, the execution of these parodies often falls flat with many jokes feeling like retreads rather than fresh takes. The humour relies heavily on slapstick and crude jokes, which may appeal to some but leave others wanting more substance. The film's attempts at satire are overshadowed by its reliance on bodily function gags and slapstick humour, which can feel juvenile and uninspired. Anna Faris, as always, brings her comedic charm to the role of Cindy, managing to shine even when the material does not. Craig Bierko's portrayal of Tom Ryan, a character reminiscent of Tom Cruise, provides some laughs, particularly during a scene that parodies Cruise's infamous couch jumping incident on Oprah. However, the film struggles to maintain a consistent comedic tone, often feeling disjointed as it jumps from one parody to another. The special effects in Scary Movie 4 are surprisingly well executed for a film of this genre, with the CGI tripods and other visual elements standing out as highlights.

Yet, these technical achievements are not enough to compensate for the lack of a cohesive and engaging script. The film's narrative feels like a patchwork of loosely connected scenes, with little effort made to create a compelling storyline. Director David Zucker, known for his work on Airplane, brings his signature style to the film, but it lacks the cleverness and wit that made his earlier works memorable. The inclusion of B-grade celebrities like Dr. Phil, Carmen Electra and Mike Tyson adds to the film's chaotic feel, but their appearances do little to elevate the overall experience. In summary, Scary Movie 4 is a mixed bag. While it offers moments of humour and some impressive special effects, it ultimately falls short of delivering a satisfying comedic experience.

Fans of the franchise may find some enjoyment in its familiar formula, but those seeking a more sophisticated parody will likely be disappointed. The film's reliance on slapstick and crude jokes, combined with its disjointed narrative, makes it a forgettable entry in the series. That wraps up my review of Scary Movie 4, and I'm giving it two and a half stars out of a possible five stars. Thanks for listening.
