A Life of Greatness

Why do we sometimes sabotage the very things we’ve worked so hard to get? In this short episode of Sarah’s Thoughts, mindset coach Sarah Grynberg explores why love, success and stability can sometimes make us want to pull away, create conflict or blow things up just when life is going well.

So today, I want to talk about one of the strangest things I've learned about how we're wired that I see as a mindset coach with a lot of my clients. Right before your life is about to get better, there's a good chance you'll try to burn it down.
The moment right before things go well is the moment that a lot of people self-destruct. And I can tell you, it's not a coincidence, it's your nervous system. We've all felt like this. Things start going right, the relationship's good, the work is landing and out of nowhere, you pick a fight. You pull back, you find a reason to blow it up or you just quietly sabotage it until it falls apart on its own. And afterwards you think, what's wrong with me? Why would I do that when everything was finally so good in my life?
Here's the answer. Nothing is wrong with you. Your brain just did exactly what it's built to do.
Here's the science underneath it. Your brain is basically a prediction machine. So it's constantly comparing what's happening right now against everything that's happened to you before. And using that to guess what's coming and keep you safe. Familiar means predictable. Predictable means your brain believes it knows how to protect you. So to your brain, safe doesn't actually mean good. Safe means known. It means what it's got data on. So for a lot of us, if what you grew up around was chaos or disappointment or love that came with conditions, that's the data that your brain spelled its predictions on. And calm can feel wrong. Stability can register as a threat. Good can feel unsafe, not because it is, but because your brain has no map for it. Your brain doesn't move you towards what's good for you. It moves you towards what's familiar. And those are not always the same thing.
So when things get to good, to calm, to steady, some part of you gets uncomfortable and it reaches for the familiar. It recreates the chaos it knows how to survive in, not because it wants you to suffer, but because on some level the struggle is the place your body knows the rules. I've watched myself flinch away from good things because good was foreign territory and my system didn't trust it. And once I understood what was actually happening, everything changed because you can't interrupt a pattern you can't see. So here's what I want you to do with this. The next time things are going well and you feel that itch, that pull to pick the fight or pull away or blow it up, stop and name it. This is the good feeling unfamiliar, not the good being wrong. That one sentence creates a gap. And in that gap, you get to choose. You don't have to obey the pull. You can feel the discomfort or things being good and let it be good anyway. You're allowed to have a life that feels calm and safe. You just have to let your nervous system catch up to it. It takes practice. The first few times you sit in the good without sabotaging it, it will feel genuinely uncomfortable. Your body will tell you something's wrong and it isn't. That is just discomfort. It's just the feeling of your baseline moving, of your system learning that good is allowed to be yours.
Stay. Don't run. Let the good thing be good long enough for your brain to realise that it's safe. That's the work. And it's some of the most important work you'll ever do.
