The Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement is a film that attempts to capture the whimsical charm of its predecessor but falls short in delivering a fresh and engaging experience. Directed by Garry Marshall, the movie continues the story of Princess Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, who is now 21 and poised to ascend the throne of Genovia. However, a law requiring her to marry before becoming queen throws a wrench in her plans, setting the stage for a romantic comedy filled with predictable twists and turns.
The film opens with Mia returning to Genovia after graduating from college, only to be informed that she must find a husband within 30 days to secure her place as queen. This sets off a series of events that are both formulaic and lacking in originality. The plot is driven by the conflict between Mia and Viscount Marbury, played by John Rhys-Davies, who wants his nephew, Nicholas Devereaux, played by Chris Pine, to take the throne. Despite their initial animosity, Mia and Nicholas find themselves drawn to each other, leading to the inevitable romantic entanglement. Anne Hathaway reprises her role with the same charm and grace that made her a standout in the first film. Her portrayal of Mia is endearing, and she manages to bring a sense of authenticity to a character caught between duty and desire. Julie Andrews, as Queen Clarisse Rinaldi, lends her regal presence to the film, though her talents feel underutilised in a subplot that lacks depth. The chemistry between Hathaway and Chris Pine is palpable, but the script does little to explore their relationship beyond the surface level.
The film's setting, the fictional kingdom of Genovia, is portrayed with a mix of American and European influences, creating a somewhat disjointed sense of place. The production design, while colourful and vibrant, often feels like a stage set rather than a living, breathing world. This lack of authenticity extends to the supporting characters, who are often reduced to stereotypes and cliches. Garry Marshall's direction is competent but uninspired, relying heavily on genre conventions without injecting any new energy or creativity. The film's humour is light and occasionally amusing, but it rarely rises above the level of a typical teen romantic comedy. The pacing is uneven, with some scenes dragging on while others rush through important plot points. In summary, The Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement is a film that will likely appeal to fans of the original, particularly younger audiences who enjoy fairy tale romances. However, for those seeking a more substantial and innovative story, the film may feel like a missed opportunity. Despite its shortcomings, the movie is buoyed by the performances of its lead actors who manage to infuse the film with moments of genuine warmth and charm.
