Coming up on NBA Today, we're on the eve of a new era in Philly. Malika has an exclusive conversation with the star-studded Sixers. Plus, find out if Darryn Peterson still holds a grudge with AJ over the number one pick. The rookie star tells it all to our Hall of Famer, Marc Spears.
And our experts are making their finals predictions before the season tips off, and we're putting our names on who'll be playing deep into June. All that and more on NBA Today.
All right, we are just under 24 hours until the start of the NBA regular season. Celtics Pistons will start the season followed by a ring night at Madison Square Garden. But we start with a developing story out of the Bay Area. Steph Curry tweaked his right ankle during the team's open practice in San Francisco last night. Head Coach Steve Kerr told reporters afterward that Curry avoided a major issue, and luckily, that will be the case for the Warriors. Now we are here now with our own Shams Charania. Shams, one more thing you can tell us about Steph.
Shams Charania (1:06)
Sure. Stephen Curry participated fully in practice today at the Warriors facility in the Bay Area, and I am told he will play in the season opener on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Warriors are lucky. They avoided a serious injury here. It is believed to be a minor right ankle sprain, so it's not that right knee which experienced a sprain in the right knee, which ailed Stephen Curry throughout last season. He missed significant time last year with that injury, so it's not that right knee, it's that ankle, but I'm told Stephen Curry did everything today. It was a light session, but he participated in everything and he will be on track to play on Wednesday.
George Sadano (1:40)
Good news. A sigh of relief, I'm sure, for the folks in the Bay Area. All right, the preseason wrapped up on Friday. LeBron was playing in front of the Philly home crowd for the first time.
LeBron James, Tyrese Maxey, will show off their connection here early. LeBron with the steal, Maxey secures it and he'll lob it up to James.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:03)
Never gets old, George.
George Sadano (2:06)
LeBron certainly never gets old, it seems like.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:08)
Literally.
George Sadano (2:09)
Second quarter, Philly down one, two-man game between Maxey and LeBron.
LeBron with the end one, LeBron eight and seven, Sixers up two at the half. Joel Embiid dominated on both ends of the floor for the Sixers. Embiid comes up with the block here on Jordan Walsh. Maxey grabs the rebound.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:28)
And then they're off to the races.
George Sadano (2:32)
Galen Brown with the finish.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:33)
Still a little surreal for me.
George Sadano (2:36)
Those guys combined for 77 points in this one.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:42)
Man down, man down. He's going to knock it down.
George Sadano (2:44)
And a few possessions later, watch the big fella here, Chiney.
Chiney Ogwumike (2:48)
Oh, hello. That's what you love to see from JoJo.
George Sadano (2:53)
Here's Embiid after the game.
Joel Embiid (2:57)
I guess he's good to dunk. I thought I would never dunk again.
I guess I don't know what happened. I'm not going to get assessed.
George Sadano (3:05)
Embiid game high 27 points in 29 minutes. Sixers would lose in OT 125 to 120
The Sixers projected starters were all effective in their preseason finale against Boston on Friday, though Vijay Edgecombe did not play in the game. Embiid scored 27, as I mentioned, in those 29 minutes. LeBron had a game high seven assists. Here's Malika with more on the Philly super team conversations.
Shams Charania (3:31)
Boston Celtics have traded Jalen Brown to the 76ers. LeBron's a Sixer.
SPEAKER_7 (3:37)
41-year-old says he wants to win a title for Philly.
SPEAKER_8 (3:40)
I'm super excited. Like I said, just being here, I'm super excited to get in front of these fans. It's been like, okay, we respect the way you play the game, but we hate you.
Yeah, we're going to be on the same side now, guys.
SPEAKER_9 (3:56)
The 12-year-old, to me, is like, is over the moon, you know? If you play no glaze, but you play one of the greatest, if not least. Yeah, so. Greatest. We both grew up watching, so that's an honor and a privilege in itself. You got one of the greatest players in the world that ever played this game in the locker room, on the bus, in the film room.
I think that's pretty cool.
