Hello, Smart Money Tree Podcast listeners. Welcome to this week's show. My name is Kirk Chisholm, and I'll be your host. So today, I'm joined with Matt Morizio. How are you doing, Matt?

Doing really well, man. I'm excited to be on this. Thank you for having me on the show.

Yeah, glad to have you. For those of you who don't know Matt, tell us a little bit about your background.

**Matt Morizio** (0:27)
Well, we have a common bond in our Massachusetts roots. I grew up in the town over from where your office is. Grew up in Walton, Mass. But for the past five years of my life, I live in Charleston, South Carolina now. So I took my talent south like Tom Brady did. Just not as far south. But my whole life, my upbringing, I was an athlete, I played baseball professionally, I played with the Royals for five years. Really learned about life and who I was then.
Man, real life since getting released, which is actually the kind way in baseball of saying getting fired. When I got released in spring of 11, I had just gotten married and real life really accelerated then.
Spring of 11, I was released, just got married the fall prior. You fast forward, what's that, 15 years.
And now I live in Charleston. I just had my eighth child. We homeschool our kids, launched this business at 42 years ago, this business being my own RIA, Reconstructing Wealth, at 40 years old, with seven children at the time. Sole provider. You know, like you, I am not a poster child for conformity. You know, like I've always sort of walked the contrarian path. And that's why I'm really excited about being on the show to have this conversation, because like it's one thing to say you're contrarian, but when your body of work, your life reflects it, it's a little different, or maybe it carries a little bit more weight.

**Kirk Chisholm** (1:50)
Eight kids, man, you need to go buy a farm.

**Matt Morizio** (1:53)
That's on the future radar.

**Kirk Chisholm** (1:54)
Start your own baseball team. You need one more.

**Matt Morizio** (1:56)
That's right. I mean, shoot, if my wife and I play, we have enough players in a coach or a bench player, however you want to look at it. But a farm is on the, I mean, that's part of our pipe dream. That's kind of one of our visions, not necessarily for the old fashioned way of like, hey, get everybody out there working, but actually I will get everybody out there working too.

**Kirk Chisholm** (2:15)
I don't know what to say, man. Eight kids, that's awesome.

**Matt Morizio** (2:18)
Thank you, man. It is. It's a real blessing. It's a full life, I put it that way. It's fuller than full. I always joke that if Mother Teresa said this, I can say it. She said, I know God only gives me what I can handle, I just wish he didn't trust me so much sometimes. And I think sometimes I think about that too in my own life.

**Kirk Chisholm** (2:33)
It's like finance. You grow into your capabilities. You earn more money, you start spending more money, you just grow into it. I think it's the same thing with like families. You had a big family growing up, right?

**Matt Morizio** (2:43)
Well, my wife did. She was one of five and my mother is one of seven.
And my wife's parents are all big families too, but personally only have one brother, but I've been around bigger families. Admittedly though, having a big family was not on my radar. That was not like something I gave a ton of thought to as a kid. I guess, A, I have four boys, four girls now, so I can see how their brains work differently. I was a boy that didn't really care about like family. All I wanted to do is be outside and play with my friends. And that never really was on my radar. I just always chased that baseball dream. And I guess I assumed that have a couple kids, two, three kids one day, but you know what they say when you assume. So here I am with eight.

Good for you, man. I always thought the challenging part, well, obviously raising him is a logistical challenge in itself, I'm sure.

**Matt Morizio** (3:35)
Sure.

**Kirk Chisholm** (3:36)
You know, I grew up with a sister, so I didn't see that. So I have no idea how you'd even do it. But I would think the biggest challenge right now is the financial impact. Like the amount of money it takes to raise a child now is crazy.
