I used to get hit with a $12 monthly fee on my bank account, and just paid it for years. But do the math, that's $144 a year. Over 10 years? Almost $1,500.

I'm flying to New England with my family and we are going to do all the cozy fall things. We're starting in Boston and from there, we're going to drive up to New Hampshire to stay in Concord before going to Vermont and then heading over to upstate New York. After the heat of the summer, I am so ready to have a Gilmore Girl moment and layer on sweaters while driving under the fall foliage with the windows down. I think I'll even be able to smell snow. And if I can't, well, I'm sure I can still smell the apple cider donuts at the Apple Farm Market between Boston and Concord. The best part about planning this magical trip is that I know I can put a little more apple picking cash in my pocket for the trip. By listing our space on Airbnb and with the co-host network, you can partner with a local pro who has hosting experience and can help take care of all the important details for you. It feels like a practical way to make better use of our space while we're away, while also bringing in a little extra cash from time to time. I love visiting La Cologne in Beverly Hills. They use Square to run an airtight operation. Normally, when I'm at La Cologne for a fast caffeine fix, I am on the go, so it is a lifesaver that I can pay quickly. You probably know Square as the thing you tap your card on at your favorite coffee shop, restaurant, salon, or local store. But for the person running that business, Square is a whole lot more than a way to get paid.
Square brings the tools you need to run and grow your business together in one system, from payments and appointments to staff, inventory, sales, and customer relationships. Whether you're starting something new or looking for a better way to run the business you already have, Square gives you the tools to take payments, manage your day-to-day, and keep growing. And right now, you can get up to $200 off Square hardware at square.com/go/mnn.

And that's what I took away from my conversation with legendary investor Ray Dalio. Ray Dalio started investing when he was just 12 years old, built Bridgewater into one of the biggest hedge funds on the planet, and made more money for his clients than any other hedge fund manager alive. I had Ray on Money Rehab last year, and honestly, I do not get starstruck very often these days, but I totally was with Ray. I cannot even play it cool. He is one of the greatest living investors, and he is so in demand that not a lot of people get to ask him for his advice, but he made time for us Money Rehabers. Ray has an all-weather portfolio designed to withstand any economic condition. I'm gonna break that whole thing down at the end of the episode. But before I unpack it, it's really important to understand how he sees the markets. And I know it sounds kind of woo-woo and unnecessary, but I'll show you what I mean. Dalio's whole worldview starts with one simple idea. Money is debt, and debt is money. I know it takes a second to wrap your head around it, but once it clicks, it really clicks. Almost all the spending power in the economy comes from somebody borrowing, in other words, credit. And every dollar of credit creates a dollar of debt that somebody else eventually has to pay, right? It's a marketplace. When the borrowing keeps piling up faster than the income to service it, it starts hardening like plaque in an artery, and it starts squeezing out everything else. Ray's diagnosis for the US, we have got a lot of plaque, and we're at the risk of an economic heart attack. It's dramatic, but honestly, fair. And why can't the government just handle it? Ray has an answer for that too. A government's debt works exactly like our credit cards, but governments have some levers that we do not. Like governments can print money, and that's cool, but printing money doesn't exactly create wealth. It actually just waters down every single dollar that's already out there, which shows up in our lives like inflation. A government can also tax its people to cover its bills. So when a country is drowning in debt, those are the levers, it can tax or it can print.
