Today, we're speaking with Dr. Helané Wahbeh. She is the Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. And if you don't know what the Institute of Noetic Sciences is, you have to check it out. There is an entire clinical research facility dedicated to understanding extrasensory perception, the paranormal, parapsychology. It's a fascinating institute. And Dr. Wahbeh also leads rigorous interdisciplinary research on consciousness, health, and extended human capacity.

She's received a five-year National Institutes of Health, that's NIHK award, for advanced training in clinical research in neuroscience, in electrophysiology, and biostatistics. Dr. Wahbeh is especially known for her pioneering research on channeling.

She's authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, and she brings 25 years of a dedicated meditation practice to her work at the frontiers of noetic science. We're very excited to have you here because one of the topics that gets the most attention here is channeling. And you are literally the authority on not just channeling, but the science of channeling. Is there science of channeling? How can we study it? How can we distinguish between imagination and reality?

Where can we begin in terms of your personal connection with channeling?

Helané Wahbeh (4:22)

I think I have a very unique story that I bring to the topic of channeling and the science of channeling specifically.

And so, you heard in my background, I have this clinical training, academic training. But what people don't hear about in my background is my actual personal experience of channeling as a child growing up. And my introduction to this was at my grandparents' house at 10 years old, which was basically a spiritualist seance that I showed up in my grandparents' living room and there are about 30, 40 people in the space sitting in a circle. And my grandmother and my uncle were doing something that we called trans-channeling.

Can you tell us a little bit about your family history? Like your ethnic background, who is your family?

Helané Wahbeh (5:17)

So I'm actually Palestinian-American and my family is from a little town outside of Jerusalem called Berzeit. It's a university town. And my family's been there for multiple millennia.
