Fifty Plus

September 18, 2026

Doug Pike discusses Harris County’s property tax increase, then shifts to a few stories that caught his eye: a Viking silver discovery in Finland, Christian Bale’s foster care village designed to keep siblings together, and a tiny fossil feather found in dinosaur dung.

All right, three, two, one, away we go with another edition of Fifty Plus, the show that takes care of seniors in a way that no other show around here really does. But until there are other shows doing what I do in here, I'll happily carry the load and make sure that you and I know about things that we should know about. I don't hit it all. I really kind of count on you guys, same as I do with my outdoor show. By all means, if you want to hear something, if you want to hear me do an interview with someone or just tell you what I think about something, let me know. Shoot me an email. You can also go to the talk back button at the iHeartRadio app. There's a little red, I believe it's a red button. Go to the station, go to Kprc on the iHeartRadio app, and then look for the talk back button. And that will give you 15, 20 seconds, I think maybe a little bit more even, to let me know what you want me to deal with. And I will find somebody who knows more about it than either of us, and I will bring them on the air. I'm actually struggling with one particular category. I need an ophthalmologist who will come on and answer some questions for me on behalf of a listener who is looking for interest, or looking for some specific information about something that any ophthalmologist could answer off the top of the head. So if you are one and you would like to help this person and help the rest of my audience by sharing some of your knowledge, please reach out to me. Shoot me an email, dougpikeatihartmedia.com.

All right, I'll tee it up first this afternoon with a little bit of a forecast. I used to do that every day and then it kind of dawned on me. By the time I come on the air, the day is about half over anyway for most of us. But it's still important to a lot of people who are trying to make afternoon plans. And that's when we might have a chance, a very slim chance of a shower this afternoon.

Still the same old highs in the low 90s, still the same old lows in the high 70s or low 80s. And it's going to be that way for quite some time. There's not really a whole lot on the horizon, except maybe, I don't know, unless you want to talk about what's on the National Hurricane Center's map. Let's do that for a second.

The yellow thing that became an orange thing a few days ago and looked like it might really become a thing is pretty much gone now. There's a little white X out there, kind of noting where this system was when it was trying to be something, but it's going to fall apart within the next day or two. They'll take that, I've never seen that white X, by the way. That's something new this year. And then to the east of that, that one's probably five or 600 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean, if not more. And then another few hundred miles east of that, way out in the middle of the ocean, is a little yellow blob that is expected in the next several days to potentially get a little bit of a build up. And then it's going to hit some more of that, that what the National Hurricane Center calls not conducive to development. So this one's going to fall apart too, it looks like. And we've got at least several weeks, even if that thing turns and starts to build, and you got two or three weeks to figure out what you want to do about it. In market news today, and I get what I give from Yahoo Finance. The actual website is finance.yahoo.com, gives me a nice overview of what all four of the big indicators are doing. It lets me know that gold this morning, actually all four are in the red. Last time I looked, which is about, let's call it mid morning, gold had dropped $7.50. It's just a smidge, if you will, below $4,400.
