Oh, yeah!

Craig Carton (0:02)

Come on, Pat Benatar! Chk, oof, chk, chk, and, and, take it to town, tap, ba-da-da-dum. So, a quick question for you. If you're LeBron James, if you're Derek Jeter, if you're Eli Manning, if you're Sue Bird, I don't know, if you're Reggie Bush or Richard Sherman, what do those athletes have in common, you ask me? Well, all of them are celebrity endorsers of the predictive market platform Polymarket. Polymarket has taken over half a million dollars in action on whether or not the Cornell Seven will be found guilty of felony sexual assault, also known as gang rape.

Huh, that's interesting. We're now letting people wager on the outcome of a potential gang rape trial. Now there are some reports that, because of the negative attention that's come their way, Polymarket is in the process of maybe, I guess, refunding people.

And taking the opportunity to wager on that down. But didn't anybody think that that was problematic when they put it up, number one? Number two, what kind of loser do you have to be to wager money on the outcome of a gang rape trial? That's a sick dude right there that would put money on that.

Chris McMonigle (1:44)

I can't imagine it. Is that not fair for me to say? Yeah, yes, that is fair. That you have to be deranged. Crazy. To want to place money on that.

Craig Carton (1:54)

Now, Polymarket, if they have indeed taken it down, that's interesting because three hours ago, they defended having that contracted action up by saying, this is a quote, this case and sexual assault on college campuses more broadly are deeply important issues. And the public, and now I'm power phrasing, like the public should be able to weigh in on that by betting on it. Like what? It's weird.

Chris McMonigle (2:26)

That is weird.

Craig Carton (2:27)

Strange, right? Yeah. But I guess for Derrick Jeter and Sue Byrd and LeBron James and others, as long as the check clears, they don't care.

Chris McMonigle (2:35)

Well, we'll find out.

We'll find out if there's any outrage now. They're under fire. There is one report that they have decided to take it down.

Craig Carton (2:44)

Only because people started complaining about it?

Chris McMonigle (2:46)

Of course, yeah.

Craig Carton (2:47)

But that means the ethos of the company is, no, no. We want people to bet on this.

Chris McMonigle (2:52)

If it's out there for debate and people will take sides on it, then we will do it.

Craig Carton (2:56)

Yeah. But to me, look, and I'm not wearing white to my wedding, obviously.

The reality is that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Agreed. Like, not all money is good money. No. Right?

Chris McMonigle (3:08)

I would think there was...

Craig Carton (3:09)

Like, this is an alleged gang rape. I mean, I know there's a lot of he said, she said, and I don't want to get into it because there's a lot on both sides. And, you know, I'm respectful that we don't know the entire story. Probably never will.

But the allegations are still what they are.

Chris McMonigle (3:23)

Correct.

Craig Carton (3:23)

And obviously, something happened. We know that, consensual or non, we know that a lot of guys had sex with one woman and were stored in ketamine and all that kind of nonsense, right? But you have to be some kind of depraved idiot to wage your money on the outcome of a potential gang rape trial.

Chris McMonigle (3:42)

Yeah.

Craig Carton (3:43)

Like, isn't that going a little too far?

Chris McMonigle (3:45)

I would think so.

Craig Carton (3:46)

Yeah, I would think so, too.

Chris McMonigle (3:47)

I can't imagine looking for it. I can't imagine thinking.

Craig Carton (3:51)

Over half a million dollars was put up on it. On both sides, obviously.

Chris McMonigle (3:55)

Yeah, yeah. That's crazy.

Craig Carton (3:57)

Like, I saw that. I was like, come on now. And not to put all the pressure on Sue Bird, she's the only woman of the athletes I mentioned there. Like, you're a woman. Like, you're comfortable supporting a company and lets people to wager on gang rape?

That's good by you. All the check cleared, so I guess it is. Right? I don't know.

Chris McMonigle (4:17)

I think we've entered into dark territory there. We're going to find out how they feel about it, I would think.

Craig Carton (4:21)

I don't think you're going to get a word from any of them.

Chris McMonigle (4:23)

Well, I mean.

Craig Carton (4:23)

Derek Jeter ain't saying nothing about it. You know, Foley's not.
