Poltergeist (1982) - Tanginas, Splorches & a Terrifying Clown Doll
That Aged Well
October 5, 2026
Creepy October is coming in with a classic…it’s 1982’s Poltergeist! A film that an entire generation saw too soon (thanks PG rating!), this is not a Steven Spielberg movie no matter how much you might think it is. This is a JoBeth Williams and Zelda Rubinstein movie.

Paul, I recently had a houseguest. Wonderful friend, wonderful human.
She and I just happened to be having a conversation about ghosts. I don't know why.
Paul Caiola (0:10)
Sure.
Erika Villalba (0:10)
And I mentioned that I don't actually believe in ghosts, because I've never seen one, ever. And then I made an offhand joke about the fact that I live on basically an American Revolutionary War battlefield, and I've still never seen a ghost.
Paul Caiola (0:23)
And your apartment's been around for like 100 years.
Erika Villalba (0:25)
And my apartment's been around for 100 years.
Paul Caiola (0:26)
Someone has absolutely died in there.
Erika Villalba (0:28)
It's built on top of a literal battlefield.
And then I just end the conversation, and my friend gets real quiet. And then she says, she slept at my house the night before. And she says, so I felt a presence last night.
Paul Caiola (0:44)
Okay.
Erika Villalba (0:46)
I was like, where? And she's like, in your apartment.
I was like, what? And she's like, I want you to know I'm really open and receptive to these things, which is maybe why I feel it and you don't. And I was like-
Paul Caiola (0:57)
You are very closed off.
Erika Villalba (0:58)
I am very closed off.
Fair. I understand why a ghost would see me and be like, that seems like a lot. I don't-
Paul Caiola (1:04)
It seems like a lot of work.
Erika Villalba (1:05)
I don't want to deal with that. That seems like so much work.
Paul Caiola (1:08)
She's anxious enough, frankly.
Erika Villalba (1:11)
Like, she seemed guilty telling me. Basically, I live with someone that I didn't know about.
Paul Caiola (1:17)
Well, could she introduce you?
Erika Villalba (1:19)
I was like, what was it?
Paul Caiola (1:21)
Was it a male or female presence?
Erika Villalba (1:22)
Because she just said a presence, but she's not sure. But she says she felt-
Paul Caiola (1:26)
So she's not that open.
Erika Villalba (1:27)
She felt a presence in my house. And I was like, my cat died in there. Could it be the cat?
I'm fine with that.
Paul Caiola (1:35)
I want more. Okay, listen to me right now. Do not come to my house and tell me you feel a presence, period. I want details. If you don't have details, don't start the story, okay? That's what I'm saying.
I want to know if the ghost can give a blowjob, like the ghost in Ghostbusters.
Erika Villalba (1:51)
Right?
Thank you. It's all I'm asking.
Paul Caiola (2:07)
Hey, I'm Paul.
Erika Villalba (2:08)
And I'm Erika.
Paul Caiola (2:09)
And this is That Aged Well.
Erika Villalba (2:11)
Yesterday's Pop Culture Today.
Paul Caiola (2:13)
It is genuinely a month of the year that I love, except for the pop culture I'm forced to imbibe during it.
Erika Villalba (2:20)
Welcome to Spooky October.
Paul Caiola (2:23)
Spooky. And I'm going to say something right now. And no one knows this except me and Erika, but I think this is going to be the scariest October that we've done on record. Wow.
Cause every other year we've had one movie that was really genuinely not scary in any way. That's not happening this year.
SPEAKER_4 (2:43)
That has not yet happened.
Paul Caiola (2:45)
All right.
Erika Villalba (2:45)
We haven't watched everything yet.
Paul Caiola (2:47)
But I'm very confident that the one that I haven't watched yet is also going to scare the bejesus out of me. Bejesus gone.
Erika Villalba (2:55)
Yes.
Paul Caiola (2:55)
Bejesus exit stage left. All right. Before we get to the movie today, Erika, we have a couple of Apple podcast reviews. Do you want to read the first one?
Erika Villalba (3:02)
Sure. Our first review comes from JMO2112. I feel like I just read someone's passcode out.
Paul Caiola (3:08)
Yep.
Erika Villalba (3:09)
They write, better late than never.
Paul Caiola (3:11)
Jennifer Lopez, JMo.
Erika Villalba (3:13)
JMo, JMo2112.
They're from the future. They're from the year 2112
Paul Caiola (3:19)
2112, yeah.
Erika Villalba (3:20)
That Aged Well has been in my podcast queue for far too long and yet somehow I wasn't actually listening.
Paul Caiola (3:26)
Oh, that's new.
Erika Villalba (3:27)
Then it's like me and Paul. I don't actually listen.
Paul Caiola (3:29)
Yeah. Look, JMo2112, when people model behavior for you, it's understandable that you follow suit.
Erika Villalba (3:37)
Whatever he said.
Paul Caiola (3:38)
Yeah.
Erika Villalba (3:39)
Then I stumbled upon the Muppet Christmas Carol and followed up by listening to all of the other holiday episodes. It ended up being great timing because I was recently starting a new job and I have a long commute. Before I know it, I will have listened to the entire back catalog and then I don't know what I'm going to do.
